Vasko Popa (조영필 역)
After play
At last the hands clutch at the stomach
Lest the stomach burst with laughing
But there is no stomach
One hand just managers to lift itself
To wipe the cold sweat from the forehead
There's no forehead either
The other hand reaches to the heart
Lest the heart leap out of the breast
There isn't a heart either
Both hands drop
Idle drop into the lap
There's no lap either
On one hand now the rain is falling
From the other grass is growing
What more should I say
(Vasko Popa Selected Poems, translated by Anne Pennington, Penguin Books, 1969)
[개역]
At last the hands clasp the belly
Lest the belly burst with laughing
But the belly’s not there
One hand just manages to lift itself
To wipe the cold sweat from the forehead
The forehead’s gone too
The other hand clutches at the heart
Lest the heart leap out of the breast
The heart’s gone too
Both hands drop
Idle drop into the lap
The lap’s gone too
On one hand now the rain is falling
From the other grass is growing
What more should I say
After the game
Finally the hands grab the belly
So the belly won't burst with laughter
Only there's no belly
One hand barely lifts itself
To wipe the cold sweat from its forehead
There's no forehead either
The other hand reaches for the heart
So the heart won't leap out of the chest
But there's no heart either
Both hands fall
They fall idly into the lap
There's no lap either
In the palm of one hand
Now the rain falls
From the other the grass grows
What can I tell you
(Homage to the lame wolf, translated by Charles Simic, Oberlin College Press, 1987)
