석영 자갈은 알려진 바와 같이 강바닥이나 수로 둑에서 나오는 흰색의 작은 구형 달걀 모양의 매끄러운 석영 돌의 한 유형이다. 더 큰 바위에서 기계적으로 부서진 후, 수년간의 충돌과 급류의 소용돌이에서 굴러가는 과정을 거쳐 최종 형태를 갖추게 된다. 그 아름다움으로 인해 장식 대상이 될 수 있고 건축 자재로도 사용될 수 있다는 사실 외에도 백색 도료는 불을 얻기 위해 불꽃을 장식하는 데에도 사용된다(부싯돌이라고도 함).
