거룩함에 굶주리고 목말라
떠났네 속세를
자신의 백성과 그 자신을
날개달린 군주들의

중세의 세르비아 왕국인 네만야(Nemanya) 왕조를 세운 스테파누스 1세(Stephanus I)의 셋째 아들인 성 사바(Sabas)는 17세 때에 그리스의 아토스 산(Mount Athos)에서 수도생활을 시작하였다. 그는 부친의 도움으로 세르비아 수도자들을 위하여 아토스 산에 수도원을 따로 세운 후 원장으로 봉사하였다. 그러다가 1207년 그의 형제인 스테파누스 2세와 불칸(Vulkan) 사이에 불화와 내전이 발발했을 때 고향으로 잠시 돌아가기도 했었다.
수많은 수도자들과 함께 돌아온 그는 스투데니카(Studenica)에 수도원을 세운 것을 비롯하여 온 나라의 개혁, 특히 교육을 위하여 헌신하여 땅에 떨어졌던 신앙과 교육이 부흥되기 시작하였다. 그의 노력은 국민들의 단결을 불러 일으켰고 교회 또한 크게 융성하게 하였다. 그는 방인(邦人, 해당지역 출신)사제와 주교를 존중하여 그들에게 교회를 맡김으로써 더욱 발전시키는 덕을 지녔다. 그는 두 차례나 성지를 순례했는데, 두 번째 순례 중 불가리아(Bulgaria)의 티르노보(Tirnovo)에서 사망하였다. 그는 세르비아의 수호성인이다. 그는 사바(Sava)로도 불린다.

If hail threatened, one had to shout into the sky: 'St Sava, send your flock back from our village!', and thunderstorms on St Sava's day were believed to herald great upheavals in the land.
