ST SAVA

Around his head fly bees

And form a lIiving halo

In his red beard

Strewn with lime flowers

Thunder and lightning play hide-and-seek

Round his neck hang chains

And twitch in their iron sleep

On his shoulder his cock blazes

In his hand his all-wise staff sings

A song of crossroads

To his left flows time

To his right flows time

He strides over dry land

Escorted by his wolves

(translated by Anne Pennington, 2011)

St. Sava

Bees circle his head

Building him a lIiving halo

Thunder and lightning

Play hide and seek In his red beard

Sprinkled with linden blossoms

A chain hangs from his neck

And Shudders in its iron sleep

On his shoulder a rooster burns

In his hand the wise staff sings

The song of the crossed roads

Time flows to the left of him

Time flows to the right of him

He walks on the dry land

Trailed by his wolves

(translated by Charles Simic, 2019)

Note:

stand[be] at the crossroads

*St Sava was a travelling saint; like the god Dabog, he journeyed through the world, teaching people many skills, including that of beekeeping.

**'chains': besides a staff, St Sava was usually held to carry a chain.

***'his cock': sacred to St Sava.
