흰 돌 무리를 돌본다
녹색 언덕에서
모든 돌을 돕는다
상속받은 붉은 동굴에서
출산하는 것을**
가는 곳마다

He tends his white stone flock
On the green hillside
He helps each stone
In the inherited red cave
To give birth
Wherever he goes
His flock follows
The hills echo with stone footfalls
He stops in a yellow
Unapproachable glade
Milks the stones one by one

Thick stone milk to drink
Shimmering with the seven colours of the rainbow
Strong teeth and secret wings
Grow with the stone milk

St. Sava The Shepherd
He guards a herd of stones
On the green meadow
Inside the ancestral red cave
He helps each stone
To give birth
Wherever he sets out ot
The herd trails after him
The hills thunder with stone-like steps
He halts in a clearing
Yellow and secluded
Stone after stone he milks
Gives his wolves to drink
The thick stone-milk
That mirrors the seven colours of the rainbow
Strong teeth and secret wings
Grow when you drink that milk

Note:
*One legend tells how St Sava changed a shepherd and his flock to stone, his hounds to wolves, and the cream from the sheep's milk to scree. Paradoxically, perhaps, St Sava was also said to have taught people how to make cheese and yoghurt. Another legend says that on his saint-day he sits in the top of a pear tree and summons his flock of wolves; he then feeds them and tells them which sheepfolds to raid in the following year.
**'To give birth': besides making water flow from the stone, St Sava's magic staff could perform a host of other tasks, including opening locked doors, helping women give birth, and creating bears, wolves and squirrels! (시집 주, 413쪽)
