ST SAVA'S JOURNEY
Не journeys over the dark land
With his staff he cuts
The dark beyond him into four
He flings thick gloves
Changed into immense cats
At the grey army of mice
Amid the stoгm he releases his chains
And lashes the ancient oaken land
To the fixed stars
He washes his wolves' paws
That no trace of the dark land
Should remain on them
Hе journeys without a path
And the path is born behind him
(translated by Anne Pennington, 2011)
St. Sava's Travels
Не travels over the dark earth
With his staff out in front
He cuts the darkness in four
Throws the fat mittens
Changed into tomcats
On the grey army of mice
Unties the fetters in the midst of a storm
Ties to the motionless stars
The earth made of old oak
Washes the paws of his wolves
So the tracks of dark land
Will not remain on them
Travels without a road
And the road is born in his wake
(translated by Charles Simic, 2019)
Note:
*'He flings... At the grey army of mice': one legend tells how St Sava was travelling in a dark land ravaged by a plague of mice; St Sava then changed his glove into a cat, which got rid of them all. It is believed that the 'dark land' represents the under-world and the mice the shades of the dead: another link with Dabog, the god of the dead.
