검은 새의 임무
검은 새가 피에 젖은 날개를 말린다
붉은 모란의 불에
그의 앞으로는 들판이 펼쳐지네
녹인 사람의 쇠로 새겨져
영광스러운 금으로 변화된
풀은 글자들 사이를 지배하고
그들을 한 줄로 세운다
마음대로
네 개의 검은 바람의 손에서
검은 새가 그의 들판을 잡아챈다
그리고는 그것을 정오에서 자정까지 둘둘 만다
한밤중에 그는 하늘 위를 날아
어딘지 그가 아는 어딘가에 부리에 문 것을 떨어뜨린다

THE BLACKBIRD'S MISSION
The blackbird dries his blood-drenched wings
At the fire of red peonies
Before him the field stretches out
Inscribed with molten human iron
Transmuted into honourable gold
Grass holds sway between the letters
And falls them into line
As it wills
The blackbird wrests his field
From the hands of the four black winds
And rolls it up from midday to midnight
At midnight he flies over the sky
Bears off in his beak* somewhere he knows where
His green scroll

*'Bears off in his beak': in several folk epics, news of the battle is borne to the womenfolk by ravens - in 'The Death of the Jugovici's Mothe' (Smrt majke Jugovica), for example, the mother is only able to grieve when two ravens bring her her youngest son's hand. Popa has fused the ravens of the epics with the blackbird of the field's name. (시집 주, 415쪽)
