The Tower of Skulls
Tower of death
On the bony foreheads shimmers
A terrible memory
From the eye-sockets
Black clairvoyance looks
To the end of the world
Between the toothless jaws
Sticks
A monstrous last curse
Around death walled up in the tower
The skulls dance on the spot
The final starry dance

In it the châtelaine frightened

*It was only in the nineteenth century that the Serbs began to wrest their freedom from the Turkish occupiers. The First Serbian Uprising (1804-1812) was led by the charismatic Karadorde ('Black George'). In 1809 his forces suffered a defeat at the Battle of Cegar: the Serbian commander Sindzelic, hopelessly outnumbered, exploded an ammunition store, destroying his own men with the enemy. After the battle, the Turks built a tower encrusted with the skulls of the Serbian dead. Still standing, it is known as Cele-kula, the Tower of Skulls. (시집 주, 415쪽)
