The stone into a sun-bearing cloud
And the cloud into a deer with gold antlers

How you transform the deer into a white basil flower

바질(Basil): Ocimum basilicum .L 그리스어 '바실레우스'에서 유래하였으며, 그 뜻은 '왕'이다.
꿀풀과에 속한 한해살이풀이자 향신료의 일종이다. 이탈리아 요리, 중국 요리에 주로 사용된다. 중국이나 대만에서는 라륵(羅勒) 또는 속어로 지우칭타(구층탑 九層塔)이라고도 부른다. 태국 요리에도 종류에 따라 호라파(Horapha; โหระพา)와 카파오(Khaphrao; กะเพรา)라는 이름으로 많이 쓰인다. 인도에서는 신성하게 여기기 때문에 음식에 넣지 않고, 바질 자체만 차로 달여 마신다.
바질만의 상큼한 향이 있는데 박하처럼 화~한 느낌을 주지만, 그 정도가 약하기 때문에 고수, 박하처럼 호불호가 갈리는 향신료는 아니다. 생으로 샐러드에 넣어서 먹을 정도. 특히 토마토와 잘 어울리기 때문에 인살라타 카프레제 같은 샐러드나 스파게티 같은 파스타를 비롯한 각종 요리에 들어가는 토마토 소스에 주로 첨가하는데, 열을 가하면 향이 약해지기 때문에 일반적인 향신료들보다는 많이 넣어주어야 한다.
