The Wolf Land

1

Father I cannot see our sunny land

The wolf is wreathing her up to the sky

With his black howling

He seems to be pulling her up

By her very roots

Together with her golden heart

And his own bruised one

He senses an untimely death

His own or hers

Or the death of the three-headed sun above her

Does he fear for himself father

Or for her the sunny one

The Wolf's Earth

1

I don't see our sunlit earth Father

The wolf has it swaddled

In his black howl

It seems he rips her

Out of her own roots

Together with her golden

And his bruised heart

He feels early death approaching

His or hers or the death

Of the three-headed sun above her

Does he fear for himself father

Or for her sunlit apparition

Note:

*As the world now knows all too well, Serbian and Yugoslav history is not only a tale of glory, defeat and resistance. It is also characterized by periods of savage internecine(대량살육적인) struggle: though he died before the bloody break-up of Tito's Yugoslavia, Vasko Popa lived through the vicious three-way civil war that formed a background to the national liberation struggle against the Axis powers in the Second World War.

**'the three-headed sun' (troglavo sunce): Triglav, 'The Three Headed One', was the Slav god of light.
