불타는 구슬레*를 타고
절름발이 늑대는 땅 아래로 날아가네
그는 활로 구슬레의 배를 채찍질하네
그리고 화염에 싸인 구슬레의 현(鉉)을
애무하네
이빨로 그는 구슬레의 목에서부터
개가 문 상처 자국들을 닦아내며 소리를 켜네
그는 구슬레의 나무로 된 말(馬) 머리를 갉네
그리고 그는 단풍나무 연한 살로 감싸네
그 오른쪽 앞발의 상처를
그는 괜찮은 세 개의 발로 구슬레에 박차를 가하네
구슬레가 땅의 심장에서 나오는
울부짖음을 향해 나아가게 하네
그의 아래에서 구슬레가 구슬픈 소리를 내네
불을 내뿜네
그리고 어둠을 삼키네

On a burning gusle
The lame wolf flies below earth
He whips its belly with the bow
And fondles
Its string in flame
With his teeth he scrapes from its neck
The marks of dog bites
He gnaws its wooden horse-head
And with the maplewood pap he dresses
The wound on his right front paw
He spurs it on with his three good paws
Heads it towards the howling
That comes from the heart of earth
Under him the gusle whimpers
Spits out fire
And swallows up the darkness

*구슬레(gusle) : 슬로베니아, 크로아티아, 세르비아 등 동남부 유럽 지역에서 연주하는 나무로 된 찰현악기. (출처: 두산백과)
'gusle': a South Slav folk-instrument, similar to a one-stringed viol, used to accompany the chanting of the folk epics. It is usually made of maplewood, and the peg-box ends in a carved horse's head. (시집 주, 419쪽)
