You can feel connected to the World

Do you agree with the saying, “When you start caring about the news, it means you’ve become an adult ?”

As we grow older, it’s true—we tend to pay more attention to what’s happening in the world.

But recently, I felt that truth… quite painfully.

On April 4th this year, the U.S. president Trump announced a new tariff policy. The very next Monday, I experienced my very first *Black Monday.

(*Black Monday: a term for sudden market crashes on Mondays—like in 1987.*)

Up until then, I thought I was investing safely, cautiously over years.

But in just a few days, I broke Warren Buffett’s Rule No. 1 “Never lose your money.” And Rule No. 2 “Never forget Rule No. 1”

That’s when it hit me:

“Wow. This is how the world’s changes actually affect me.”

Have you ever thought, “Why should I care about what’s going on out there?”

I used to think that too.

About 20 years ago, during my first company orientation, the finance director said,

“How can you not read the economic newspaper?”

I still remember his shocked face.

So, I bought one that very day from a newsstand.

But... I’ll be honest. I didn’t understand a word.

I was just focused on surviving my first job.

Back then, the news felt like someone else’s business.

But at some point, that changed.

Doing only my job wasn’t enough.

Why was my company suddenly trying to enter the oncology market?

Why was our public affairs team expanding?

I realized all these decisions were connected to the social and economic trends I’d been ignoring.

Still, the economic newspaper was hard and boring.

Then came a turning point:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the market faced dynamic ups and downs unpredictably, a colleague said something to me:

“Try buying just one share of a company with market leadership. It’ll make you more sensitive to what’s happening in the world.”

Out of curiosity, I did it—just because I genuinely wanted to understand the world.

That was the beginning.

That’s when the world’s business became my business.

I bought shares in semiconductors and biotech, and with my colleague’s mentoring(Relevant Brunch link: 멘토가 몇 명인가요?), the news finally made sense.

War in Gaza, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump’s tariffs—

I watched them all ripple through the stock market in real time.

Suddenly, I wasn’t just a bystander.

In this sea of global change, I could feel the waves—even at my toes.

Now, I get why K-shipbuilding and K-defense stocks are gaining attention.

The economic newspaper explains it all.

AI, semiconductors, robotics—plus global competition over energy and resources—all of these are woven into the daily headlines.

Before, I could only see scattered puzzle pieces.

Now, I’m beginning to see the big picture forming.

Just recently, I followed the U.S. presidential election news closely.

I used to think,

“Why care who becomes president of another country?”

But when Trump’s comments shake the market, it’s hard not to care.

I even attended the 2025 Seoul Money Show, hosted by the economic newspaper.

For three days, I listened to talks about stocks, real estate, gold, and crypto.

For the first time, macroeconomics started to make sense—and I loved it.

What surprised me most? The audience included everyone: teens, Gen Z, young couples with strollers, and even seniors.

Clearly, “what’s happening in the world” has become everyone’s business.

Let me share one key takeaway from the sessions I attended:

“Gold is still a risk-free asset. The U.S. is still strong—but now’s the time to look beyond it.”

Of course, even that could change soon.

That’s why I’ll keep watching.

Investment is a personal decision.

But aren’t you curious about how the world is changing?

Buy just one share of a trending company and open up an economic newspaper each day.

Only when you wade into the ocean,

you can feel the waves for yourself.

And believe me—

That’s when the newspaper becomes truly exciting.

Choose the right stock, and it’s like watching a drama—with real tension.

You might even start to feel something... for Trump.

Why don’t you give it a shot?
