[Movie] Green Book

Tony, Eyes on the road!

by Choi 최지원

What's your go-to movie and What's the reason?

One of my comfort movie is 'Green Book'. (Some people usually mention 'go-to' or 'all time legend', but my tutor taught me that comfort movie is more accurate. It's kind of movie that makes me feel at ease.)

Depending on my mood, I choose different movie. After hearing 수현 talk about a book story that the main character fights the world in their own way, It was reminded of Green Book.

the pianist, Dr. Don Shirley also fought against the racial discrimination in his own way, with dignity and grace.

You know that origin means of the title Green Book?

The Negro Morotist Green Book is an annual guidebook for African-American roadtrippers.

In the 1960's, racial discrimination was formally ended, but white people still segregated spaces, especially accommodation and restroom. It was a kind of called 'separate but equal' system, though it was never truly equal.

Here's the best scenes in my opinion, let me share you why I love it.

Tony wirtes letters to his wife, but it is very plain and not emotional at all, more like a record of what he ate and did that day. spelling is even incorrect. Then Dr. Shirley gives Tony a little coaching, adding a spoonful of emotion to his words. When his wife receives the letter, she and her friends are deeply moved. The lines are truly beautiful.

Falling in love with you was the easiest thing I’ve ever done in my life. From this moment, I will count every hour, every minute, every second, until I can hold you in my arms again.

To me this scene perfectly explain two twist techniques.

First, although he is Black, Dr. Shirley is shown to far more literary and well-educated than Tony who is white.
Second, it shows Tony gradually letting go of his prejudice against black people and acceptting Dr. shirley’s advice, and building their friendship step by step.

But above all, I just loved Shirley’s outfit, it totally reminded me of 짱구 두목님!

In fact, Dr. Shirley truly felt alone because he couldn’t fully belong to the Black or the white, he was somewhere in between. Even after receiving a big applause from white people after a fantastic performance, once he stepped off the stage he was still just a black man who couldn’t use the same restrooms.

Offstage, the Black people distanced themselves too, seeing him as a black man who was applauded by white people. He didn’t belong anywhere, and this scene explains his deep loneliness.

Yes, I live in a castle, Tony! Alone. and rich white people pay me to play piano for them. beacuse it makes them feel cultured. But as soon as I step off that stage, I go right back to being just another nigger to them. because that is their true culture. and I suffer that slight alone because I'm not accepted by on own people beacuse I'm not like them either! So if I'm not black enough and if I'm not white enough and if I'm not man enough then tell me, what am I?

The line kind of sounds like black people accent.

It's the first time he played piano even though it wasn't made by 'Steinway' and for black audience. In a local bar where black people go-to, he performed harmoniously, dancing and enjoying the moment together with everyone there.

He ended up truly belong with black people.

You must be Dolores.

A chance meeting would become a turning point in life, or even the start of a lifelong friendship. We should never let prejudice or discrimination ruin such a relationship.

Anyway, that was my review of my comfort movie!(I spent twice as much time writing it English because I’m still struggling to improve my skills.)
