하마스 ‘전투 패배 전쟁 승리’ 네탸냐후 ‘국방장관 경질’
하마스 고위 관리가 “전투 패배이나 전쟁은 승리”라며 “이스라엘 군대는 소모 상태로 몰아 넣었다”고 뉴욕타임스에 밝혔다.
네탸냐후 이스라엘 총리 체제는 ‘국방장관 경질’이 이스라엘 언론에 나오고 새 장관으로 의회에서 4석인 소수 정당인 새희망 정당의 기드온 자르가 거명됐다.
NYT는 하마스 기사에서 “승리한다는 것은 단순히 살아남는 것을 의미하며, 적어도 현재로서는 하마스가 심각하게 약화되었음에도 불구하고 그 일을 해냈다”면서 “수천 명의 하마스 전사들과 정부 관료들이 계속해서 가자의 많은 지역을 통제하고 있고, 이스라엘군이 잠시 장악했던 도시들에서, 그들이 결국 떠나면서 공허함이 남았고, 그 공백은 하마스와 다른 무장 단체들에 의해 빠르게 채워졌다”고 16일 보도했다.
NYT는 이어 “일부 전현직 이스라엘 안보 당국자들도 하마스가 이 전쟁에서 패배할 것 같지 않다고 믿는다고 말한다”고 전했다.
이스라엘군 가자지구 사령관 출신인 가디 샴니 소장은 "하마스가 이 전쟁에서 승리하고 있다"며 "우리 병사들은 하마스와의 모든 전술적 전투에서 승리하고 있지만, 우리는 전쟁에서 패배하고 있으며, 이는 큰 의미에서 그렇다"고 NYT에 말했다.
샴니 장군은 이어 “이스라엘이 하마스의 군사력을 황폐화시킨 것은 부인할 수 없는 사실이지만, 하마스는 이스라엘군이 철수한 지 불과 ‘15분’ 만에 마을들을 탈환했다”면서 "이스라엘군이 떠난 후에는 하마스에 도전할 수 있는 사람이 아무도 없다"고 말했다.
샴니 장군 패배 원인에 대해 “가장 큰 실패는 네타냐후 총리가 이스라엘의 퇴각 이후 가자에 현실적인 대안 통치 기구를 도입하려고 시도하지 않았다는 것”이라고 지적했다.
지난 6월 말, 이스라엘군 대변인 다니엘 하가리 소장은 하마스가 완전히 제거될 수 있다는 네타냐후 총리의 제안을 비난했고, 이스라엘 채널 13에 출연해 "하마스는 하나의 아이디어다"라며 "우리가 하마스를 사라지게 할 수 있다고 생각하는 사람들은 틀렸다. 하마스를 파괴하는 것, 하마스를 사라지게 하는 것이 가능하다는 생각은 대중의 눈에 모래를 던지는 것이다"고 공개적으로 밝혔다
요아브 갈란트 국방장관은 네타냐후 총리의 "완전한 승리" 슬로건에 대해 "말도 안 된다"고 노골적으로 표현했고 이제 경질 대상이 됐다.
이스라엘 언론 보도를 인용한 NYT는 “네타냐후 총리는 갈란트 국방장관 해임 방안을 고려하고 있으며 바이든 행정부와 이스라엘 정부 내 몇 안 되는 대화 상대 중 한 명 배제 조치에 이르렀다”며 “갈란트 장관 후임으로 기드온 자르로 교체할 예정이며, 그의 새 희망 정당은 이스라엘 의회 120명 중 4석을 차지하고 있다”고 밝혔다.
전직 장군인 갈란트 장관(65)은 네타냐후 총리의 리쿠드당 소속이며 하마스와 그 동맹국들에 대한 이스라엘의 전쟁 수행에 대해 네타냐후 총리와 갈등을 빚는 입장을 반복해서 취해 왔다.
지난달 그는 하마스와의 휴전 합의를 가로막는 주요 장애물이던 ‘이스라엘이 가자지구와 이집트 국경에서 철수’에 대해 찬성하며 이를 거부하고 휴전 협상을 불발시킨 네타냐후 내각 결정에 유일하게 반대표를 던졌다.
NYT는 전쟁 1년이 가짜워진 16일 하마스의 고위 관리를 실명으로 인터뷰하며 “하마스 승리”를 보도했다.
하마스 전 수장이고 핵심 설계자인 칼레드 메살은 인터뷰에서 하마스가 전쟁에서 승리하고 있으며 가자의 미래에 결정적인 역할을 할 것이라고 NYT에 밝혔다.
그는 카타르 도하에서 인터뷰로 "하마스가 우위를 점하고 있다"며 "하마스는 굳건히 유지되고 있다. 이스라엘 군대를 소모 상태로 몰아넣었다“고 말했다.
NYT는 “가자지구의 많은 팔레스타인인들은 하마스가 1,200명의 목숨을 앗아간 10월 7일 이스라엘 공격을 감행한 것에 대해 맹렬히 비난하면서, 하마스가 이스라엘에게 도시들을 폐허로 만든 대규모 폭격 작전을 벌일 구실을 제공하고 있다고 비난했다”고 메살에게 질의를 던졌고, 그는 NYT에 하마스의 결정에 대한 비판을 일축했다.

Hamas ‘loses battle, wins war’ Netanyahu ‘fires defense minister’
A senior Hamas official told the New York Times that “the battle is lost, but the war is won,” and that “the Israeli army has been driven to exhaustion.”
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s ‘fired defense minister’ was reported in Israeli media, and Gideon Jarre, a member of the minority New Hope party with four seats in the Knesset, was named as the new minister.
The NYT reported in the Hamas article that “victory simply means survival, and for now at least, Hamas has done so despite being severely weakened,” and that “thousands of Hamas fighters and government officials continue to control large parts of Gaza, and in towns briefly controlled by the Israeli army, their eventual departure has left a void that has been quickly filled by Hamas and other armed groups.”
The NYT continued by saying that “some current and former Israeli security officials also believe that Hamas is unlikely to lose this war.” “Hamas is winning this war,” Major General Gadi Shamni, a former commander of the Israeli army in Gaza, told the Times. “Our soldiers are winning every tactical battle against Hamas, but we are losing the war, and in a big way.” Shamni continued, “While Israel has undeniably devastated Hamas’ military, Hamas recaptured towns in just ‘15 minutes’ after the Israelis withdrew,” adding, “There is no one who can challenge Hamas after the Israelis leave.” Shamni attributed the defeat to “the biggest failure of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s failure to introduce a realistic alternative governing mechanism for Gaza after the Israelis withdrew.” In late June, Israeli military spokesman Major General Daniel Hagari criticized Netanyahu’s suggestion that Hamas could be completely eliminated, publicly stating on Israel’s Channel 13 that “Hamas is an idea,” and that “anyone who thinks we can eliminate Hamas is wrong. The idea that destroying Hamas, eliminating Hamas, is possible is throwing sand in the public eye.”
Defense Minister Yoav Galland has been outspoken in his call for Netanyahu’s “total victory” slogan as “ridiculous” and is now facing dismissal.

Last month, he was the only one to vote against the Netanyahu cabinet’s decision to reject the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian border, which was a major obstacle to a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, and to thwart the ceasefire negotiations.
