캐나다 주정부가 ‘레이건 관세비난’ 광고를 미국 언론에 게재하자 트럼프 미 대통령인 23일 밤 ‘캐나다와 모든 무역협상 중단’을 선언했다.
트럼프 대통령은 23일 늦게 트루스 소셜에 “캐나다와의 모든 무역 협상을 종료한다”면서, 로널드 레이건 전 대통령이 관세에 대해 부정적 말을 이용해 "캐나다가 광고를 부정하게 사용했다"고 밝혔다.
트럼프 대통령은 이어 "관세는 미국의 국가 안보와 경제에 매우 중요하다"며 "그들의 끔찍한 행동에 따라 캐나다와의 모든 무역 협상은 이로써 종료된다"고 썼다.

레이건 체제는 군비증강으로 재정적자가 높아지자 “부채가 많다는 것은 신용이 높다는 것”이라고 정치 선전으로 대중을 지배했으나, 2기 체제에서 선거 공약이던 ‘증세 없다(No New Tax)'를 파기하고 증세를 시도하다가 정치적 위기를 맞았고, 전쟁 빈발과 폭동 진압에 공권력을 남용하며, 후임자인 부시 대통령 체제에서 재정적자에 무역적자가 겹치는 쌍둥이 적자로 인해 금융위기를 초래하고 ’레이거노믹스의 종언‘으로 민주당에 정권을 내줬고 한국은 외환위기를 맞았다.
