How to make Tteokguk, one of S. Korea's traditional Lunar New Year dishes

Seollal, Korea's Lunar New Year, wouldn't be complete without tteokguk, or rice cake soup. While many Koreans are still digesting a bowl or two they had over the extended Lunar New Year holiday our News Features reporter Ahn Sung-jin introduces us to this warm comforting dish, that's more than just a meal.

한국의 음력 새해인 설날은 떡국 없이는 완전하지 않을 것입니다. 많은 한국인들이 길어진 설연휴에 걸쳐서 한두 그릇 먹은 것을 아직 소화시키고 있는 동안에 우리의 뉴스 특집 안성진 기자가 우리들에게 이 따뜻한 위로를 주는 음식을 소개합니다. 그것은 단순한 한 끼의 식사 이상입니다.

또한 설날이라고 알려진 한국의 음력 새해는 국가의 주요 휴일 중의 하나입니다. 전통적으로 한국 사람들은 함께 모여서 민속놀이를 하며 제사를 지내곤 합니다. 그리고 한국사람들은 설날을 생각할 때 떠오르는 것이 한 가지 있습니다.

Then what is tteokguk that everyone is talking about? Tteokguk which literally combines the word tteok -rice cake-and guk -soup-is a typical traditional dish eaten during the Lunar New Year holiday. The owners of this rice cake mill have been making their own tteok for more than 50 years. It's especially during these holidays that orders for garaetteok, a long strip of rice cake dough, and the main ingredient in the tteokguk surges.

그러면 모두가 얘기하고 있는 떡국은 무엇일까요? 글자 그대로 떡 즉 '라이스 케이크' 그리고 국 즉 '수프'라는 말을 합친 말인 떡국은 음력설에 먹는 전형적인 전통 음식입니다. 이 떡방앗간 주인들은 50년 이상 자신들의 떡을 만들어 왔습니다. 특별히 이번 휴일 동안에 가래떡-기다란 줄 모양의 떡반죽-주문과 떡국 주요 재료 주문이 급증합니다.

First rice, which has been soaked, is ground twice to soften it before it is steamed. After that it's all mashed together to create long strips of garaetteok. The long strip represents people's desires to have good fortune. Once the rice cake hardens for a day or two, it is then cut into oval pieces that resemble the shape of coins once used in Korea, the yeopjeon.

우선, 이미 물에 담가논 쌀을 찌기 전에 부드러워지게 하기 위해서 두 번 갈아냅니다. 그 후에 모두 으깨서 기다란 줄모양의 가래떡을 만들어 냅니다. 긴 조각은 행운을 가지려는 사람들의 소망을 나타냅니다. 일단 떡이 하루 이틀 동안 굳어지면 한때 한국에서 사용되었던 동전 즉 엽전 모양을 닮은 타원형 조각으로 자릅니다.

The exact origin of eating tteokguk on Lunar New Year's day is unclear, but it is believed to give good luck for the year. A traditional saying even goes that you haven't become a year older until you've had a bowl of tteokguk. Eating tteokguk during Seollal still remains a tradition, even if buying handmade tteok to make your own tteokguk is becoming less common.

음력설에 떡국을 먹는 것의 정확한 유래는 명확하지 않습니다. 그러나 떡국을 먹는 것은 그해에 행운을 가져다주는 것으로 믿어지고 있습니다. 심지어 전통적인 속담에 떡국 한 그릇을 먹어야 비로소 한 살 먹는다 라는 말이 있습니다. 자신의 떡국을 만들기 위해서 수제 떡을 구매하는 일이 흔하진 않지만, 설날에 떡국을 먹는 것은 여전히 전통으로 남아 있습니다.

"For us it's mostly regular customers that have been coming for a long time. Not a whole lot of new customers because it's not common to eat this much tteok. People now normally just buy small packages." Tteokguk is not only a symbolic dish of Korea's Lunar New Year, but it also provides a glimpse into the hidden meanings behind the ingredients.
