칠석물

더위 가시는 비

음력 7월 7일. 칠석날 내리는 비를 칠석물이라고 한다. 강원도 양양 지방에서는 이 날 비가 오면, 견우와 직녀가 만나 흘리는 기쁨의 눈물로 보고 농사의 풍작을 점쳤다고 한다.

오늘, 견우와 직녀가 오랜만에 만나서 반갑다고 울고 헤어질 땐 가슴 아파 울었는지, 간간히 해가 나고 맑아지는 듯하다가 쏟아질 땐 굵은 빗방울이 세차게 땅으로 꽂혔다. 그래도 비가 와주었으니 올 가을엔 모든 농가에서 좋은 소식이 들려오길 바란다.

여름 끝자락까지 더운 날씨가 계속되지만, 그래도 칠석을 넘기며 바람은 조금씩 달라지고 있다.

The time of Chilseok, the heat is getting eased, which means that the hot weather becomes milder. I can feel the subtle difference of the wind.

견우와 직녀 이야기는 다 알지만, 혹시 아이가 외국 친구에게 소개해 주고 싶다면 어디서부터 어떻게 시작해야 할까. 전해 내려오는 이야기답게 조금씩 다른 버전이 있기는 하다. 이는 그중의 하나이다. 

이전까진, 견우와 직녀의 사랑 이야기로만 대강 알고 있었는데, 그들이 헤어진 이유가 맡은 바 임무를 다하지 못해 하늘님의 노여움을 샀고, 일 년에 한 번 만나는 것도 열심히 일을 한 뒤에 주어지는 혜택임을 새삼 알게 되었다. 

견우와 직녀가 한 해 동안 열심히 일을 하지 않으면 만날 수 없고, 그리하면 비가 오지 않으니 설화와 현실 그 어딘가에 만나는 지점이 흥미롭다. 

Long ago, in the heavens, there lived a weaver named 직녀 Jiknyeo, who was the daughter of the Heavenly King. She was incredibly skilled at weaving and created the most beautiful fabrics.

On Earth, a young cowherd named 견우 Gyeonwoo worked hard taking care of his cows. He was diligent, and his cows were healthy and strong.

They loved each other so much they forgot about their work. The king of the heavens was furious since they were not doing their jobs, so he separated them with the Milky Way. They became very sad.

The king of the heavens saw how sad they were and felt sorry for them. So, he made a deal: They could meet once a year if they worked hard and did their jobs well.

On that special day, magpies and crows from all over would fly to the Milky Way and create a bridge with their wings.

We call this day as Chilseok, and remember the true love story as well as duty to work.
