15화. Tom's Diner

다산초당

여수 향일암을 다녀오는 차 안에서 우연히 라디오에서 흘러나오던 이 노래를 듣는 순간, 받았던 충격은 지금도 선명하다.

살면서 읊조리듯이 부르는 노래도 없었지만, 왠지 이 가수의 노래는 내 인생의 최애 곡이 되겠다 싶었다. 그리고 세월이 20년 흐른 지금도 수시로 듣는 노래다.

특히나 어제 영어 말하기 시험을 폭삭 망하고 햇살 가득히 내리쬐는 바다가 보이는 카페에서 귀에 이어폰을 꽂고, '1시간 반복 음악 듣기'를 하며 가사를 적어본다.

잘 부르고 싶은데, 노래방에서 부를 때마다 "마! 치아라!" 소리를 듣는다. 그래서 혼자 가서 부르려 한다.

들으면 정말 부르기 쉬워 보이는데, 고도의 능력과 훈련이 필요하다. 세상에 쉬운 건 없다.

잘 외우고 싶은데, 한 줄 이상은 기억할 수 없다.

리듬을 잘 타고 싶은데, 여전히 음치, 박치의 수준에서 벗어나지 못한다.

그럼에도 언젠가는 이 노래를 Suzanne Vega처럼 잘 부르고 싶다.

그리고, 생을 다하는 날까지 이처럼 평온하게 살다가 가고 싶다.

I open up the paper, there's a story of an actor

Who had died while he was drinking, It was no one I had heard of

And I'm turning to the horoscope and Iooking for the funnies

When I'm feeling someon watching me so I raise my head

There's a woman on the outside looking inside, does she see me?

No, she does not really see me 'cause she sees her own reflection

And I'm trying not to notice that she's hitching up her skirt

And while she's straightening her stockings, her hair has gotten wet

Oh, this rain, it will continue through the morning as I'm listening

To the bells of the cathedral I am thinking of your voice

And of the midnight picnic once upon a time before the rain began

And I finish up my coffee And It's time to catch the train
