The Dante Garden

오래된 나무들과 오래된 건물들, 그 사이를 이어주는 잔디와 봄꽃들은 내 산책길을 이어주는 나만의 yellow brick road 이자 이정표들이다.

어느 한구석 정성스럽지 않은 유티(Univ of Toronto) 캠퍼스 건물 곳곳의 면모를 대하며 느끼는 상아탑의 권위와 자유스러움이 좋다.

벽돌 하나하나, 유리창틀 하나하나, 출입구 하나하나마다의 조각들, 부조물들, 그 빅토리아식 건물들의 한켠을 부드럽게 감싸고 자라나는 아이비, 작고 소박한 정원들에 심어진 꽃과 풀, 너무 평화롭고 아름답고, 신뢰가 가득하다.

간혹 만나는 설치 작품들엔 발길이 오래도록 머문다.

건물 내부의 긴 회랑들과 멋진 창들, 강의실들.. 호그와트의 해리 포터와 친구들이 교복 자락을 휘날리며 뛰쳐 나올 듯하다.

토론토 다운타운에 수없이 산재된 토론토 대학의 이런 박물관 급 건물들의 property management에 얼마나 많은 비용이 들지는 어렵지 않게 상상되지만 내가 거의 이십여 년 전에 처음 방문했을 당시보다 오히려 더 젊어진 듯한 건물들을 비라보고 또 들어가 보는 건 큰 즐거움이다.

유티의 모토인 '세월을 따라 자라나는 나무처럼' 잘 배워 사회로 진출한 동문들은 학교의 fund raising 행사가 있을라치면 엄청난 거금을 순식간에 모으곤 한다. 나같은 일개 토론토 시민도 이 멋진 대학에 자긍심을 느끼는데 동문들은 말할것도 없겠다.

‘At the southwest corner of St. Michael’s campus in the University of Toronto, there is a sculpture garden depicting what is widely considered the greatest work in the Italian language. To commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri in 2021, artist Timothy Paul Schmalz created a sculpture for each of the 100 cantos in the Divine Comedy. Standing in the middle of the project is a life-size sculpture of Dante at work in exile. The work reflects the poet’s journey through Hell and Purgatory and finally to Heaven as depicted in The Divine Comedy. Each sculpture highlights one of the most interesting scenes from the canto, creating a visual read of the epic poem. The poem consists of 100 cantos, which are grouped together into three sections, or canticles, Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. There are 33 cantos in each canticle and one additional canto, contained in the Inferno, which serves as an introduction to the entire poem.’ - Toronto Scoop

두꺼운 단테의 신곡은 지옥편 몇 페이지를 읽다가 덮어 버렸지만 음모와 살기 가득한 Dan Brown의 Inferno는 흥미진진하게, 또 빠르게 읽어 치웠던 기억이 있다. 사람들이 주로 지옥 편에 빠져 제목과 같은 comedy 적 요소를 간과할 수 있다는 점이 놀라운데, 나 역시 제목에 왜 comedy 가 들어가는지 갸웃했었다.
