Where True Peace Begins
여호수아 11장 23절 : "그래서 그 땅에서는 전쟁이 그치고, 사람들은 평화를 누리게 되었다."
여호수아 14장 15절 : "드디어 그 땅에 평화가 깃들었다."
가나안의 대규모 정복 전쟁이 마무리되고, 크고 작은 전투들도 하나둘 끝나면서 마침내 이스라엘과 약속의 땅 위에 평화가 찾아옵니다. 그러나 전쟁 끝에 주어진 이 평화를 바라보며 묻게 됩니다. 애초에 하나님께서 평화를 허락하실 계획이셨다면, 왜 이토록 치열한 전쟁을 지나게 하셨을까요?
하나님의 뜻은 단순한 안식이나 평온에 있지 않았습니다. 평화는 순종의 열매일 뿐, 그 자체가 목적이 아니었습니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘에게 원하셨던 것은 하나님 나라의 선포였습니다. 그들이 전쟁의 한가운데서도 하나님을 바라보며 흔들림 없이 서는 것이었습니다.
이스라엘이 치른 싸움은 단순한 군사적 충돌이 아니었습니다. 눈에 보이는 피와 눈물의 전쟁 뒤편에서 훨씬 더 깊고 치열한 영적 전쟁이 펼쳐지고 있었습니다. 그 전쟁에서 이스라엘의 가장 큰 적은 다른 민족이 아니라 그들 자신이었습니다. 그들이 끝까지 하나님께 순종했기에, 마침내 전쟁이 끝나고 평화가 주어졌습니다.
여호수아는 용맹한 전쟁 영웅이었지만, 그의 승리는 그의 힘이나 전략에서 비롯된 것이 아니었습니다. 그것은 그의 마음이 얼마나 날카롭게 하나님을 향해 있었는지를 증명하는 결과였습니다. 여호수아는 전쟁의 한복판에서도 하나님과 연합했고, 그 속에서 참된 쉼을 얻었습니다.
진정한 승리는 평온한 땅에서 시작되는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님과 하나 되는 그 자리, 바로 그곳이 참된 평화의 땅입니다.
주님, 저는 흔들리는 제 마음을 붙잡으려 애썼습니다. 그러나 이제 깨닫습니다. 제가 붙들어야 할 것은 불안과 의심으로 요동치는 제 마음이 아니라, 흔들리지 않는 주님 한 분임을 고백합니다. 하나님의 군사로 설 때 제 검이 무뎌지지 않기를 원합니다. 영의 눈을 밝혀 주셔서 생명을 향한 길을 분별하게 하시고 끊어내야 할 것들을 단호히 끊어낼 용기를 주세요. 주님께로 향하는 길에서 주저하지 않도록 주님께 모든 것을 맡기게 해 주세요. 감사합니다, 주님. 아멘.
Joshua 11:23 "Then the land had rest from war."
Joshua 14:15 "And the land had peace."
The long, hard battles were finally over. The great wars of conquest were done, and even the smaller fights were coming to an end. Peace was settling over the land God had promised.
But as we read that peace finally came, we might quietly ask, If God always planned to give peace, why did they have to go through such painful war in the first place?
The answer is this, God never meant for peace to be just about rest or comfort. Peace was never the goal, it was the fruit. What God longed for was this, that His people would learn to trust Him fully, to stand firm even when the world was shaking. Their calling wasn’t just to win land, but to proclaim the kingdom of God with their lives.
The battles Israel fought weren’t only against enemy armies. Behind the visible wars, behind the dust, blood, and tears, was a deeper fight. A spiritual one. And Israel’s greatest enemy wasn’t the nations around them, it was their own wavering hearts. But they obeyed, and so, at last, the war was over. Peace came, not because the world calmed down, but because they had stood with God to the end.
Joshua was a brave and brilliant leader, but his strength didn’t come from clever plans or strong arms. His victories showed something else, his heart was sharply tuned to the voice of God. Even in the middle of war, he was united with God, and from that place, he found rest.
True peace doesn’t start when everything around you is calm, it begins when you’re one with God. That’s the real promised land.
Lord, I’ve tried so hard to steady my anxious heart, but now I see, it’s not my emotions I need to hold on to. It’s You. You alone are unshakable. Let my sword stay sharp as I stand as Your soldier. Open my spiritual eyes so I can walk the path of life, and give me the courage to cut off what I need to leave behind. Don’t let me hesitate when You call. I give You everything. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
