수정은 손으로 입을 가리며 호호 웃었고 혜원은 미소 지으며 고개를 저었다
"저도 몰라요. 그 친구분도 계속 혜천에 살고 계세요?"
"아니... 한참 전에 세상 떠났지."
"아..."
"마흔 겨우 넘어서.
병원에 있을 때 마지막으로 가서 봤어.
그날 뭐라고 말했냐면.
머리맡에 작은 오디오를 갖다 놨는데
노래가 나왔거든.
가수 이름이 더스티 스프링필드였는데.,
침상에 누워서 그러더라고.
어떻게 이름이 먼지 낀 봄 들판이야?
이러니 내가 가슴 아파 오래 살겠어?
하더니 웃는 거야."
그러고는 또 웃었지만 눈가는 살짝 그렁했다.
서둘러 눈꺼풀을 깜빡이자 물기는 곧 지워져 버렸다.
"미안. 나이 드니까 자주 울컥해.
어떨 때 보면 아무것도 아닌데 울고 있어서 민망해.
나 피곤하지?"
"아니에요. 명여 이모에 비하면 훨씬,
몇 배는 덜 피곤하세요."
혜원이 농담처럼 말하자 수정은 금방 울 뻔했던걸 잊고 깔깔거리며 웃었다.
"맞다. 너네 이모만 할까.
성질 하나도 안 죽고 어찌나 괴팍한지.
친구들 다 떨어져 나가고
곁에 나밖에 없다. 얘"

지난번 글쓰기 모임에 갔다가
예스 24 중고서점에 들렀는데
첫 눈 맞춤한 이 책에 손이 가더군요
마치,
"왔구나 기다리고 있었어 어서 날 데려가"
하고 말을 거는 것 같았어요
역시나 레옹이 좋아하는 인물들과 장소들, 대화들이
몇 센티 종이 사이사이에 숨어 있더군요
거기서 건진 '먼지 낀 봄 들판'노래를
함께 나누고 싶어 졌답니다
물론 선곡은 레옹이 한 거예요^^
소설을 쓴 '이도우' 작가님이
독자를 위한 상상력의 여운을 남겨놓으셨더군요
