From the Book

There is a real pull between exploring those things that make us come alive while, at the same time, being present to our responsibilities and our life stages. But why do we so often assume that pursuing those things we want to pursue can only be done at the expense of our responsibilities? Why can’t we recognize and embrace the connection between the kind of art we long to make and the reality of our truest identity?

What if you desire to do a particular thing because God created you a particular way, not to tease you or to make you miserable, but to actually mold you into becoming more like him, for his glory and the benefit of others?

Could it be possible that the thing you most long for, the thing you notice and think about and wish you could do, is the thing you were actually made and are being equipped to do? Could it also be possible that somewhere along the way you got the message that to follow desire would be selfish, when really, it would be the opposite?

Ashley's Note

I’ve been serving a group of singles in their 30s in my church for two and a half years. On the last Sunday of April, we had a chance to talk about one thing that we needed the most in that month as our April was almost over. Rest, they said. They needed a break from their ordinary lives and be free from stress. “And what for?” I wanted to ask back, but just held my mouth.

Please don’t get me wrong. I believe all people deserve to have a safe yet playful place to take a break from their mundane days. Let us not forget that even God himself rested on the seventh day of creation. But as a believer, I believe we need to redefine the definition of ‘taking a break’ by including four more verbs: Tune, Reinterpret, Replenish, and Give.

We take a break to tune our perspective to the frequency of God’s perspective.

We take a break to reinterpret the debris of our wounded hearts with Jesus’s language.

We take a break to replenish our souls with Holy Spirit’s creativity.

And above all, get ready to give your small world the glimpse of real refreshment that only the Creator of rest itself can give; because I believe that we are made to pursue a life of giving.

So, welcome to our table. I pray you may find peace at our table for the next ten days. Remember. You are what you give.

Giving Table Members' Sentences with "Pursue"

I want to pursue what is eternal, truthful and beautiful which I can carry on to heaven. Pursuing these things makes your life meaningful and fulfilling. Today's reading inspires me so much, in many ways. Our desire could come from Good God who created and shaped us in particular ways to want and pursue the particular things. It is not wrong to follow what I long to do if we truly love God and obey him. From Ashley's writing I find meaningful insights to ponder on when we take a break. Good things to remember ^^ Thank you for your insights. - G.

I think I had pursued external things, such as academic diploma, company, career. In order to achieve those things, I worked so hard even at the cost of my time and health. I have changed. I believe so. I have been learning to cherish this moment and embrace being me just as the way I am. - C.

I pray that I pursue what God wants me to pursue in my life. - A.

I first need to know what exactly I am pursuing, in order to tune my desire with God's. - P.
