내가 좋아하는 노래들

Paul Simon 과 Art Garfunkel 이 career 초기시절 거의 무명이었을 당시 London 에서 busking 을 하며 나름대로의 breakthrough 를 하고자 참 열심히 살던 시절이 있었답니다. 이들의 노래들 중 그 때 만든 노래들이 마음에 깊이 와닿는 곡들이 많은데, 제 경우에는 "On Second Avenue" 라는 노래가 제게는 이들의 노래가 아닌 제 노래처럼 부를 수 있는 곡입니다.

뉴욕 맨해튼의 거리명들 중 많은 수가 런던의 그것들로부터 그대로 따온 경우가 많은데, 2nd Avenue 도 마찬가지입니다. London 의 2nd Avenue 는 가 본 적이 없지만, New York City 의 2nd Avenue 는 덜 개발되고 한적한 거리입니다. 1990년대 중반 71st Street & 2nd Avenue 에서 단기간 지낸 적이 있었고, 노래에 묘사된 대로 왠지 허름하고 오래 된 studio apartment 였지요.

Art Garfunkel 도 당시 (60년대 후반에 이 노래를 만들었던 듯 합니다) 이런 곳에서 그의 애인과 같이 지낸 듯 하군요. 가사를 보면 60년대 후반의 향취가 그대로 배어나오는 듯 합니다: our stars took different paths 라는 표현도 있고, your flowers and your birds 라는 표현까지 나오는 것을 보면 60년대 후반 hippie movement 를 그대로 옮겨놓은 듯 합니다.
