Stardust

내가 좋아하는 노래들

영국의 가수인 Rod Stewart (Sir Roderick David Stewart CBE) 를 처음 접했을 때가 1980년대 중반이었습니다. 1945년생인 그의 그의 70년대 앨범재킷을 보면 정말이지 피하고 싶은 외모였지요. 그의 노래들도 1975년 "Sailing" 을 제외하면 상당히 '양아치'같은 노래들이 많았습니다. 예를 들어 77년 "Hot Legs" 나 "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy" 라는 노래의 music video 를 보면 특히 그의 creepy-ness 는 심했지요.

하지만 1990년에 four-CD compilation set 를 내놓고부터는 (Storyteller – The Complete nthology: 1964–1990) 그의 음악과 목소리, 그리고 스타일까지 변했습니다. 예전에 소개한 Downtown Train 도 이 앨범에 속해있는 곡이지요.

이후 2002년에서 2010년간을 통해 시리즈로 내놓은 "The Great American Songbook series and Soulbook"를 통해 그의 중후한 멋이 느껴지기 시작했습니다. 이 시리즈에는 다른 가수들의 예전 명곡들을 remake 한 작품들이 많이 수록되었지요. 참 멋진 앨범들입니다. 그 중에서도 "Stardust" 라는 노래가 참 감미롭지요. 그가 젊었을 때부터 들려준 "distinctive raspy singing voice"와 더불어 연륜에서 오는 여유와 잔잔함이 아주 많이 배어있는 노래입니다.

Rod Stewart 의 version 은 original 가사 (the Hoagy Carmichael version) 에 추가한 부분이 있는데, 그 부분이 참 마음에 듭니다. 깊은 밤에 또는 노을이 지는 저녁에 들어보시면 아주 좋은 노래가 될 듯 합니다.
