지난달 연방대법원이 임신중절권을 인정한 판결을 뒤집는 결정을 내리면서 파장이 계속되는 가운데 프랑스의 한 제약사가 처방전 없이 구입이 가능한 사전 피임약 판매를 FDA에 승인 신청했다. 처방전이 필요한 약품과 처방전 없이도 구매 가능한 약품에 대한 영어 표현을 살펴보자.

Over-the-counter birth control?

For the first time, a pharmaceutical company has asked for permission to sell a birth control pill over the counter in the U.S.      

-  a pharmaceutical company :제약사 

 - a birth control pill : (경구) 피임약

-  over-the-counter : 처방전 없이 구입할 수 있는 

Hormone-based pills have long been the most common form of birth control in the U.S., used by millions of women since the 1960s. They have always required a prescription, generally so health professionals can screen for conditions that raise the risk of rare, but dangerous, blood clots.     

- hormone-based pills : 호르몬 조절을 기반으로 한 약 (피임약)

-a prescription : 처방 , 처방전 ( prescription drug : 처방약) 

- screen for : ~을 검사하다

-blood clots :혈전 

That potential for a precedent-setting decision once again places the FDA under an intense political spotlight.  Late last year, the agency was condemned by abortion opponents and praised by women’s rights advocates when it loosened access to abortion pills. The agency faced similar political pressures in 2006 when it approved over-the-counter use of the emergency contraception pill Plan B.
