미국 연방대법원이 50여 년 전 '로 대 웨이드' 판결을 뒤집으면서 미국 여성 수백만 명이 낙태(임신 중단)에 대한 헌법상의 권리를 보장받지 못하게 됐다.  하지만 산모의 생명이 위험한 경우를 예외로 두기로 한다는 조항이 있어 어떤 경우가 산모의 생명이 위험한 상황이라고 판단할 것이냐에 대한 논란이 일고 있다.

The patient was seven weeks pregnant in Texas and experiencing kidney failure — what many doctors would consider a life-threatening condition. But abortions there are banned after a fetal heartbeat is detected (around six weeks into pregnancy) 

-be seven weeks pregnant : 임신 7주다.

-experience kidney failure : 신장질환을 앓다 

-a life-threatening condition: 생명을 위협하는 상황

-a fetal: 태아의

When pregnant people get diagnosed with cancer, or people with cancer get pregnant, they sometimes must decide whether to end the pregnancy to undergo surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, since those treatments can hurt the fetus. However, doctors wonder which threats are serious enough to absolve them of legal risk.

- get diagnosed with cancer : 암 진단을 받다

-end the pregnancy : 임신을 중단하다(임신 중절하다)

-undergo surgery, radiation or chemotherapy : 수술, 방사선 치료, 항암치료를 받다

-fetus : 태아 (임신 8주 후의 태아) // embryo :태아 (임신 후 8주 전의 태아)
