많이 배운 책이다. 중국에서 잠깐 일하면서 느꼈던 그 알 수 없었던 불편함을 잘 담았다. 중국은 상당히 흥미로운 나라다. 알고 싶지 않았는데, 알고 싶어지기도 하다. 스티븐 잡스의 애플에 관심이 많았는데, 이 책은 팀쿡의 리더십 아래 애플이 중국에서 어떻게 변해갔는지 그려냈다. 조직의 역학, 조직에서 비즈니스에서 변화를 만들어내가기 위한 전제조건, 현실적 감각, 모든 것들이 버무려져 엮여있다.
작가의 말대로 우리는 지난 20년 동안 엄청나게 큰 공산주의 국가에 자본주의를 이식하는 거라고 생각했는데, 오산이다. 그들이 자본주의를 활용하는 중이다. 순진했던 서방 국가들의 실수가 이제는 거의 명확하다. 민주주의와 자본주의 좋다, 하지만 100%좋은 건 세상에 없다. 때론 사회주의적 접근이 필요할 때가 있다. 한국의 70-80년대 성장시기를 보면, 사실 민주주의는 없었다.
여러모로 흥미로웠다. 기자 출신이라서 그런지 아주 잘 읽혔다. 영어라는 느낌이 거의 안들 정도.
여전히 난 중국에서 일해보고 싶은가. 그렇다, 근데 좀 더 내부적으로 자리를 잡은 상태에서 파견되고 싶지, 아예 새롭게 판을 짜는건 리스크가 너무 크다. 그 아픔은 충분히 경혐했다.
언제나 그렇듯, 좋은 책은 읽은 것 만으로도 고맙고 충만하다. 다음 나의 책은 무엇이 될까. 아마존 장바구니를 뒤져봐야겠다..
