내가 좋아하는 노래들

냉전시대의 분위기를 느낄 수 있는 MV 가 몇 안 됩니다. Lionel Richie 의 'Say You, Say Me," Phil Collins 의 "Separate Lives" 가 있고 Billy Joel 의 "Leningrad" 가 있지요 (이 두 노래도 나중에 소개해 드릴 예정입니다). Elton John 의 1985년작 노래도 그러합니다.

이 노래도 물론 Bernie Taupin 이 작사/작곡을 한 노래입니다. Taupin 자신의 말이 자신의 가사에는 언제나 double meaning 이 있다고 했는데, 이 노래가사에는 이중표현이 없어 보이는군요. 이 영상을 보면 등장하는 여성이 러시아인처럼 인식되지만, 사실 서독/동독이 존재하던 당시 동독쪽 (GDR) 의 국경쪽 경찰 초소였다고 합니다. 따라서 이 여성은 러시아인이 아닌 동독국적의 여성이겠지요. Anyhoo, 동유럽이나 러시아 사람들의 독특한 눈동자 색을 'With eyes that looked like ice on fire" 라고 표현했는데 이 표현은 싯적이라고 해야 할까요?

일부 가사가 참 애절한데, 이렇게 흘러가지요:

이 정체모를 동독/러시아 여인의 사진들을 slide 를 통해 보는 Elton John 의 모습이 조금은 eerie 하지만 (사진을 찍고 그걸 또 돌려본다는 사실이 말이지요) 별다른 의도(?) 가 없다면 그 마음속 애절함은 충분히 느껴집니다.
