예전 뉴욕시 시장이었던 Koch (카치) 시장은 그리니치 빌리지의 워싱턴 플레이스 14번지 (14 Washington Place, Greenwich Village) 에 있는 침실 하나짜리의 임대료가 적정수준으로 통제되는 아파트 (rent controlled apartment) 에 살았었습니다. 비좁고 소박한 곳이었지만 벽난로까지 있던 그 곳을 아주 좋아했다는군요. 이 때가 1981년이었습니다. 이 분이 처음 이 아파트에 입주한 것은 1967년으로, 당시에는 월세가 250달러였고, 그리고 1977년 뉴욕 시장이 되었을 때는 그 아파트의 월세가 475달러였다고 합니다. 작고 좁지만 맨해튼의 문화핵심에 위치한 거주지는 다른 사람들에게는 환상이었지요.

그는 시장으로 당선된 후 뉴욕시장이 거주하도록 준비된 사택인 Gracie Mansion 으로 이사한 후에도 그리고 뉴욕 시장 재임 기간 내내 이 아파트를 팔지 않고 유지했다는군요. 한 번은 기자들에게 "그 아파트, 포기하지 않겠어요"라고 말한 적이 있을 정도로 이 싸고 소박한 사랑스런 아파트를 아꼈다고 합니다. 하지만 그는 재임에 실패한 후 결국 2 5th Avenue에 있는 아파트로 이사를 할 수 없이 극히 개인적인 이유로 옮겼다는군요. 물론 월세였답니다.

제 친구 중 한 명이 Greenwich Village 의 Charles Street 에 있는 rent controlled apartment 에 살았는데, 이 때가 1987년이었고 당시 월세는 400달러였답니다. 이 친구의 아파트는 Koch 시장의 그것같이 소박하고 작은 것이었는데, 그 동네는 꽤 좋은 집들이 많았었지요. 다른 사람들은 이 친구가 아마도 저택에 살았다고 생각했을 겁니다. 1층에 있는 원룸이었는데, 길가에 바로 붙어 있었고 부엌과 욕실이 love beads 로 앞 공간과 분리된 구조였지요. 이 친구도 이 아파트를 절대 포기하지 않겠다고 말했던 기억도 납니다. 결국 그녀는 결혼을 하고 롱아일랜드로 이사했지만 말이지요.

당시에는 이 동네, Bleecker Street 동네라고 불렸던 이 동에는 참 다양한 에너지가 있었습니다. 지금도 그렇지만 말이지요. 참 많은 레스토랑, 상점들, 여러 종류의 바를 포함한 볼거리와 즐길 거리가 너무 많아서 그 거리 자체와 사랑에 빠지기는 아주 쉬웠습니다. 사람들도 슬로우 모션의 세상에서 사는 듯 했던 그 곳, 자정이 가까운 시간, 그 거리에서 쇼핑했던 기억도 있습니다. 정말 즐거운 시간이었지요.

The Mayor originally moved into the apartment in 1967, and by the time he became the mayor of the city in 1977, the apartment was reported to cost $250 a month. And when he became mayor, it was at $475. He kept the apartment all throughout his tenure as Mayor of New York, even after he got to Gracie Mansion. Once he told reporters, "It’s me, I’m not giving it up!” He eventually ended up renting an apartment from the Rudin Real Estate Family, at 2 Fifth Ave in the end.

I remember a friend of mine had a rent control apartment down on Charles Street in the Village, you would have thought she lived in a mansion because it was a great neighborhood. She was so excited to be living in the village back then at $400 a month in 1987. It was just a studio on the first floor, right at the street level, with wooden love beads separating the kitchen and bathroom from the front space. I also remember her telling me, she would never give it up! She eventually got married and moved to Long Island.  

It was easy to fall in love with the Village back then - we all called that place the Bleecker Street area - the energy, restaurants, the shops, the bars, so much to see and do. Everyone lived in a slow motion - no rush, no hassles. I remember shopping on Bleeker Street near midnight. Great times.
