나의 벗, 최 선생을 만나다.
밀레니엄 미국 여행기
최 선생( 같은 학교에 근무했던 선생님)에게 전화를 걸어 미국에 도착했음을 보고한다. 자기 집으로 빨리 오라는 성화에 '헌팅턴 라이브러리'에 가려던 계획을 다음으로 미루고 최 선생이 사는 곳으로 갔다.
최 선생은 아파트에 사는데 돈이 없는 사람들이 아파트에 산다고 한다. 우리 나라의 아파트를 생각했었는데 전혀 예상 밖이다. 3층 건물로 입구엔 조그만 연못이 아기자기 꾸며져 있으며 주위에 온통 화초와 전등으로 장식되어있다. 연말연시라 그런지 모르겠으나 집집마다 처마 밑이나 나무에 작은 전구를 달아놓아 아름답게 가꾸어 놓았다. 미국인들은 꾸미는 것을 즐긴단다. 아파트 길 건너엔 키 큰 나무가 쭉쭉 뻗어있어 시원함을 더해 주었다. 최 선생은 집안에서 창문을 통해 석양을 바라볼 때가 가장 행복하다고 한다.
2학년

위는 미국에 있는 초등학생들이 학년초에 서약을 해야 하는 내용이다. 각 담임선생님은 위와 같이 나름대로의 규칙을 정하여 발표하고 학생들은 각 선생님들의 규칙이나 선생님들의 특성을 고려하여 학급을 선택하고 학급의 담임 선생님이 제시하는 규칙을 지키겠다고 다짐해야 그 반이 될 수 있다고 한다.
교실 뒷면에는 색종이 뭉치가 각 학생의 이름 밑에 달려있다. 학생들이 규칙을 어길 때마다 한 장씩 떼어지고 떼어 질 때마다 색이 각각 달라진다. 어떤 일정한 색에 이르면 담임은 학부형에게 아동의 상태를 알리고 부모님은 성심껏 이에 응한다고 한다. 선생님의 말은 법이며 절대적이라고 한다.
선생님은 학생들을 평가할 때 되도록 긍정적인 말로 평가한다. 예를 들면, '네가 우리반이 되어서 기쁘다.' '점점 좋아지고 있다.'등등.
최선생이 해주는 저녁을 먹고 산책을 나왔다. 아파트 내부의 테니스장에서 한 뚱뚱한 아빠와 뚱뚱한 아들이 테니스를 치고 있다. 밤에도 라이트를 켜고 테니스를 칠 수 있다. 민선아빠(최선생 남편)가 휴가중이라 함께 여행하기로 약속한다. 어디로 갈까. 그랜드캐년 ?, 레이크 타호 ?, 자이언케년으로 가기로 하고 인터넷을 통해 가는 길을 검색한다. 즐거운 여행이 되기를...
With Mr. Choi Dec 27 th , 1999
I informed my former colleague Ms. Choi of my arrival in America. She urged me to come to her home right away, so I had to cancel my plan to go to the Huntington Library and went to Ms. Choi's house.
She lives in an apartment. She told me that it was a low-income housing apartment. I had thought the American apartment and our's were the same, but there are differences. The apartment was three story building, had a decorated little pond with flowering plants and lights on the entrance of the apartment.
Maybe it's because of the Christmas and New Year season, but nearly every house had decorated their eaves and trees with little lights. Ms. Choi said Americans enjoy decorating. I found the big up right trees across the street from the apartment invigorating. She said she's happiest when she sees the sun set through her window.

The above is a sample pledge that the American elementary school children make at the beginning of each school year. Every homeroom teacher prepares his or her own rules similar to the above and introduces them to the children.
And the children choose his or her homeroom teacher after considering the teacher's stated rules and character. The children who choose the homeroom teacher must promise to make good on their pledges before being accepted into the class.
At the back of the classroom, there is a bundle of construction paper of many different colors below each students name. Everytime a student disobeys a rule, the paper is torn off. As the paper is torn off, the color of the paper is changed.
When a particular color is exposed, (i) the homeroom teacher has a talk with the child's parents about his or her classroom behavior and (ii) the parents are very supportive of this behavior management scheme.
Ms. Choi said that the teacher's word is law, and it is something that the students obey without question. The teachers evaluate the students postively, such as 'I am happy that you decided to join this class' or 'You are getting better', etc.
We took a walk after having dinner prepared by Ms. Choi. I saw a father and his son playing tennis in the tennis court next to the apartment.Even at night, they can use the tennis court by turning on the light.
Because Mr. Shin, Ms. Choi's husband, is on vacation, we made vacation palns. Where should we go, Grand Canyon, Lake Tahoe? We decided to go to Zion Canyon and found a way there on the Internet. I hope it will be a good trip...
