세인트 조지의 밤

밀레니엄 미국 여행기

언니가 7인승 차를 빌려주기로 했다. 언니가 준비해준 음식을 차에 싣고 다녀오겠다고 인사를 했다. 형부와 언니는 염려를 많이 했다. 문득 언니가 엄마 같다는 생각이 든다.

드디어 출발. 겨울인데도 눈이 부시게 햇살이 강렬하다. 밖에는 끊임없이 사막. 이름만 듣던 모하비 사막을 달린다. 얼마나 달렸을까. Bastow라는 곳에서 햄버거와 음료를 사서 먹으며 또 출발.

이 기분. 정말 황홀하다. 쭉 뻗은 도로, 광활한 사막, 따갑고도 푸르른 하늘, 험준한 바위의 모습이 나타나기 시작한다.

California를 지나 Nevada 사막을 지나고 Arizona주를 통과하는데 감탄이 저절로 터져 나온다. 기괴한 암석, 구불구불 동굴과 같은 , 거대한 암석을 끼고 천천히 운전하며(길이 너무나 꼬불거려 속도를 낼 수 없다.) 지나갈 때의 이 기막힌 감동, 아! 행복해. 애리조나주를 지나 자이언 케년이 있는 유타주로 들어섰다.

사막을 횡단하는 이 기분. 얼마나 달렸을까? 약 8시간? 우리는 St. George라는 마을에서 하루를 묵기로 한다. 어느 곳에 가서 방을 알아보니 방 1개에 35$이고 흡연방 한 개와 비흡연방 1개만 있다고 한다. 둘 다 흡연방은 원치 않았으므로 다른 곳으로 가겠다고 말하고 근처에 호텔이 있는지 묻자, 아리따운 종업원 아가씨는 약도를 보여주며 설명을 해 주었다.

Days Inn이라는 곳을 찾아 들어갔다. 방 하나에 45$. 호텔은 넓고 깨끗했다. 커다란 침대 두 개가 놓여 있다. 저녁을 먹고 호텔 로비로 가서 주인 할아버지와 이야기를 나누다 지도와 여행정보를 한 아름 얻어 방으로 와 내일 자이언 케년에서 해돋이를 하자고 신이 나서 제안한다. 찬성하는 Mr. 신, 반대하는 Mrs. 신.

모닝콜을 4시에 부탁하고 잠을 잔다. 아름다운 세이트 조오지. 여기서 Zion Canyon 까지는 1시간 거리.

Dec 28th, 1999 St.George

I rented a car that seats 7 people from my sister. I took the food, that my sister prepared the day before, to the car. I then said goodbye. My sister and brother-in-law were quite concerned. "Oh, my sister cares about me, " I said to myself. Suddenly, I felt as though my sisiter was my mother.

It's winter but the sun shines very brightly. Out side the car window, the dessert is endless. We are running through the Mojavi dessert, which I heard about in name only. I thought it was in Africa.

How long did we drive? We bought hamburgers and drinks in Bastow and started to drive while eating. I took the steering wheel myself. Oh, what a feeling! I was ecstatic. There was strait road way, endless dessert, an intense sunlight and blue sky. Rough rocks began to appear. I passed through the dessert that stretched through California and Nevada. As I pass through Arizona, I couldn't help my self in expressing my admiration. As I drove slowly through the zigzaging road and went by the outlandish rocks and meandering caves, I was awestruck and lost in the sublime surroundings. "Oh, I am happy!"

We passed through Arizona and entered Utah, where Zion Canyon is located. How long did we drive? About 8 hours? We decided to stay the night a village named St. George.

A hotel staff said they have one somking room and one non-smoking room available at a cost of $35 each. Neither of us wanted the smoking room, so I said to the clerk that we don't want the rooms and that we are going to another hotel. I asked if there were any other hotels around there, and the charming staff showed a map and explained the way to another hotel. She was courteous, even though we were not her guests.

We found the Days Inn. It was $45 a room. The room was spacious and clean. There were two queen-size/king-size beds. After finishing dinner, I went to the hotel lobby and talked with the elderly man who is the owner of the hotel. I got a handful of maps, pamphlets and a book about St. George from him.

I returned to my room and suggested that we watch the sunrise at Zion Canyon in all excitement. Mr. Shin gives approval, but Mrs. Choi is not in favor of the plan.

I asked for a 4:00 a.m. wake-up call and slept. Beautiful St. George! Zion canyon's only but an hour's drive from here.
