99. 12. 30. 맑음 (LA로 가자)
푹 잤다. 10시 넘도록 잤다. 최 선생이 깨운다. 간신히 일어나 세수를 하고 Check out(11시)에 임박해 호텔을 나온다. 호텔 내부가 너무나 크기 때문에 어느 문으로 나와야 할지 몇 번 왔다 갔다 했다.
성공의 기쁨을 채 맛보기도 전에 진이가 머리띠를 호텔 서랍 안에 넣고 왔다고 한다. 그냥 가자고 하니. 꼭 가져가야 한다고 떼쓴다.
"엄마가 갔다 올게." 가는 길을 하나하나 머리에 새긴다. 돼지 그림이 있는 곳을 지나, 슬롯머신 기계가 있고, 두 개의 계단을 오르고, 그런 다음 왼쪽으로 향해서....
문 앞에 서서 카드를 집어넣으니 문이 열리지 않는다. 할 수 없이 카운터에 가서 사정을 말하고 문을 열어달라고 하니, 신분증을 제시하란다. 방을 민선 아빠 이름으로 빌렸다고 하니 그 사람을 데려 오라고 한다. 카운터에서 되돌아가려니 또 길이 막막해진다.
어쨌든 호텔 안에서 이리저리 또 한 차례 헤맨 끝에 주차장으로 나와 민선 아빠와 함께 카운터로 가니 또 하나의 카드를 만들어 준다. 방 키를 만들 때 아마 시간이 입력되어 있어, 그 시간 이후로는 사용할 수 없는 모양이다. 중간에 한 초등학교 운동장에서 최 선생이 한 밥을 먹고 달리기 시작해서 집까지 약 5시간이 소요되었다.
집에 오자마자 형부가 기다리고 계셨고 곧 언니가 온다고 한다. 저녁을 사신단다. 엽이는 짜장 먹는다 한다. 우린 한국인이 경영하는 중국집에 갔다. 깐풍치킨, 양장피, 만두, 탕수육, 짬뽕, 짜장... 을 시켰다. 형부, 언니, 고마워요.
Dec 30th, 1999 To LA
I slept like a baby. Mrs. Choi woke me up. I reluctantly got up, cleaned up and left the hotel just before the checkout time.
The hotel was too big to easily locate the the exit. So I looked around to find the exit, succeed and got out to the parking lot of the hotel. Before I had a chance to relish my success, Yoo Jin said she left her hairband in the hotel drawer. I insisted on going without the band, but she made a fuss and won't go without it. " I will get it."
I tried to remember my way to the room: "I pass by the pig pictures, the slot machines (over there), up two flights of stairs, and turn to the left. (There!)" I put the key card to the lock but the door wouldn't open. I went to the counter and asked them to open the door. The staff person said that I need to produce a piece of ID. I said I rented the room using Mr. Shin's name. She said to bring him. As I returned from the counter, I was becoming hopeless. To tell the truth, I have a poor sense of direction. That's quite serious.
I used to often lose my way home until I went to high school. Now I can find my house well because my house is in a very simple to find place.
Anyway, after wandering for a while, I came out to the parking lot. Mr. Shin and I went to the counter again. The staff person made me a new key card. Maybe the key card is time coded so that it doesn't work past the checkout time. So, it can't be used after that time.
While we were on our way, we stopped at an elementary school playground and had breakfast that Mrs. Choi had prepared. It took around 5 hours from Las Vegas to LA. My brother-in-law was waiting for us and said my sister will be there soon. He said he will treat us to dinner. Jae Yup said he would have JJajang noodles.
We went to a Chinese restaurant run by a Korean. It was filled with many guests, so we had to wait a little bit. My sister ordered Canpung Chicken, Yang Jang Pee, Mandu, Tangsuyuk, Zzamppong and jjajang. Thank you, brother-in-law. Thank you, sister.
