새해를 맞이하여 어디로 갈 것인가. 언니와 형부는 내가 라스베가스에 갔다온걸 서운해 하신다.

"우리가 구경시켜 줄려 했는데."

"아냐, 다시 가."

"그때는 늦게 도착해서 잠만 자고 나왔어."

우린 라스베가스로 향했다. 캘리포니아 사막을 달리며 그때의 감동을 다시 느껴본다.

Bastow에서 점심을 먹기로 한다. Taco와 Hamburg종류를 파는 곳으로 갔다.

'Taco? 이름은 들어봤지만 먹어보진 못했는데, 한번 먹어보자.'

타코는 얇은 빵에다 다져서 양념한 소고기와 야채를 넣고 그 위에 소스를 얹어 싸먹는다. 1개에 2$. 난 거의 모든 것을 맛있게 먹었다.

모하비 사막을 거쳐 라스베가스에 도착했다. 믿음직한 보호자가 있다는 생각에 마음이 놓인다. 보호자.참 좋다. 우린 Treasure Island(보물섬)호텔에서 행하는 보물섬 쇼를 보러갔다. 날이 어둑어둑해지고 공연 시간이 가까워지자 관광객이 몰려들었고 청춘남녀들은 서로 껴안고 뽀뽀를 하며 떨어질 줄 모른다. 난 혹시 우리 아이들이 그런 모습을 유난히 이상스레 보지 않을까 싶어 눈치를 보니 아이들은 별로 그런 모습에 신경을 쓰지 않는 듯 했다. 순수치 못한 어른의 기우였나?

다음은 미라지(Mirage) 호텔의 불쇼를 보러갔다. 화산이 폭발하는 모습을 보여주는데 불길의 열기가 대단하다. 불쇼를 보고 시저스 호텔 쇼를 보러갔다. 석고상으로 만든 인형이 빙빙돌아가며 목과 입을 움직이며 뭔가를 이야기 하는데, 주위 가람들은 하하하 웃음을 터트린다. 무슨 소릴 하는 거지?

미라지 호텔과 시저스 호텔을 연결해주는 기차같은 것이 있다. 이것을 타는 것도 재미있다. 호텔 2층 높이 정도에서 운행하는데 호텔의 정원을 위에서 감상할 수 있다. 이것도 공짜. 저녁을 보물섬호텔 뷔페에서 먹기로 했다. 10살 이하는 성인의 50%값, 11살은 55%, 12살은 60%의 값을 낸다. 1살 올라갈 때마다. 5%의 값이 올라간다. 어른 셋, 아이 넷의 식사비가 80$ 나왔다. 팁은 1인당 1$씩. 형부는 값에 비해 음식이 시원치 않다고 불평을 하신다.

그 다음 슬럿머신이라는 것을 해보기로 한다. 아이들은 카지노에 출입이 금지되기 때문에 어린이 전용 오락실로 보냈다. 딱 100$만 쓰자고 작정하고 50$을 25센트 동전으로 바꾼다. 형부와는 수준 차이가 있기 때문에 언니와 난 무조건 동전 넣고 잡아당기기만 하면되는 슬럿머신쪽으로 간다. 쏠락 쏠락, 땡땡땡땡....., 쏠락 , 땡땡, 쏠락 쏠락 쏠락,....... 안되겠다. 이렇게 돈이 들어가다간 얼마 놀지 못하겠다. 언니와 난 다시 5센트 동전으로 바꾼다. 카지노엔 얼마나 사람들이 담배를 피워대는지 머리가 지끈거리기 시작한다. 여기서 벗어나고 싶다. 얼마 후 형부가 오셨다. 50$씩 두 번 했는데, 100$이 금방 날라갔다고 하신다.

아이들이 오락실로 갔다. 아이들은 낚시놀이를 하고 있었다. 장난감 붕어가 입을 벌렸다 닫았다 하는데 자석달린 낚시줄을 붕어의 입에 넣는 것이다. 붕어의 입속에는 색깔이 있고 색깔에 따라 큰 인형, 작은 인형, 중간 크기의 인형을 선물로 받는 것이다. 엽이는 진지하게 낚시질을 했다. 엽이는 큰 인형을 받으려고 여러번 했으나 번번히 작은 인형이 나온다. 나중엔 할 수 없이 작은인형 3개를 중간인형으로 바꿈으로서 그 곳을 벗어날 수 있었다.

이제 캘리포니아로 가야 한다. 네바다 주를 막 벗어나기 전 또 하나의 카지노가 있다. 언니는 그냥 오기가 서운한지, 잠깐 놀고오자고 한다. 우린 기세 좋게 카지노로 간다. 정말 손님 대접이 말이 아니다. 기계는 인정사정 없이 돈을 먹어치운다. 아까 그 호텔은 먹으면 내 놓기도 하는데, 이곳은 그냥 먹기만 한다.

'요런 버르장머리 없는 놈이 있나. 사모님 대접이 영 엉망이네.'

Where shall we go for the New Year? Sister and brother-in-law apologized for our visit to Las Vegas being a very short one. They said they wanted to show me around town. "No, that's OK. Let's go back there once again. When we were there, we got in late and just slept and left."

We headed for Las Vegas. I enjoyed the feeling again as we passed by the Californian dessert.

We had lunch in Bastow. We went to a shop which served Tacos and Hamburgers, etc. Toco? I have heard of the name, but I had never tried it. Let's try it once. Taco is made of chopped and seasoned ground beef and cut vegetable and sauce on the thin bread (tortilla) and rapped up. It was two dollars each. I enjoyed everything.

We arrived in Las Vegas through Mojavi dessert. My mind was at ease because I had trusted guardians. It is great to have them care about you and look after you.

Later, we went to see a show at the Treasure Island Hotel.

We went to see the show named Treasure Island, held by the Treasure Island Hotel. As it became dark, the tourists gathered together, young couples were holding each other, kissing and never separating. I wondered if my children look at them with strange feelings, but they didn't care about them. Was I, being an adult, overacting?

It was very realistic. How could we see a show of this quality for free? Next, we went to The Mirage to watch the fire show. They showed the eruption of a volcano and we felt the heat of the fire. After that, we went to Caeser's Palace. Rounded plaster human figures moved their necks, lips and said something. People nearby are laughing out loud. What did they say, I wondered ?

There was a tram connecting The Mirage and Caesar's Palace. It, too, is interesting. It runs from the second floor. If you take it, you can enjoy the garden of the hotel. It, too, is free.

My brother-in-law treated us to dinner at the restaurant in the Treasure Island Hotel. Children under 10 years of age receive 50% off the regular price. 55% off for 11-year-olds, 60% off for 12-year-old children. For each year of age, they charge 5% more.

It cost $80 for 3 adults and 4 children. Tip is $1 each. My brother-in-law complained about the food, saying they were not good for the price.

Next, we tried the slot machines. My sister sent the children to the children's casino because children are prohibited in the adult casinos. I decided to spend only $100 and changed $50 into quarters.

Because I would be ashamed to gamble side by side with my brother-in-law, my sister and I went toward slot machine that did not require any skill to play. Solt, solt, solt, ding, ding, ding... I can't go on like this. If I continue to put money away like this , pretty soon, I won't be able to play anymore. I changed the quarters into nickels. My head started to ache because so many guests were smoking. I wanted to get out of here.

Later, my brother-in-law came over to us. He said he spent $100, $50 twice. We went to the children's casino. They were playing the fishing game. The toy fish opened and closed their mouths. When the fish open the mouths, you are supposed to put the fishing rod with a magnet at the end of the line into the fish's mouth. The color of the inside of captured fish varied. And depending on the color, they gave large toy animal toy, medium size toy and small toy. Jae Yup was very serious at the game. Jae Yup tried many time to get a big toy but he received small toys whenever he tried. Later, I exchanged 3 small toys into a medium size toy, and we were able to get out of there.

We, now, have to go to California. There is a casino near the border. Maybe it's because my sister was reluctant to leave, but she suggested that we play some more. We headed to the casino in good spirits. It didn't treat the guests very well. The former hotel casinos did give and take, but this hotel's machines eat the coins without giving out anything. "How dare do? You didn't treat the madam well." We left our reluctance behind and trudged our way out of the place.
