00. 1. 3 (수) 디즈니랜드

오늘은 디즈니 랜드에 가기로 했다. 어떻게 갈 것인가 연구 끝에 언니가 아침에 데려다주고 저녁에 Pick up 하기로 했다. 전날 형부와 언니 그리고 나는 디즈니랜드를 답사하고 왔다. 언니가 길을 모르기 때문에 형부와 가면서 길을 알아두었다가 오늘 아침 우릴 태워 주려는 것이었다. 아침 일찍 나가 일하시고 저녁에 처제를 위해 봉사를 아끼지 않으시는 형부.

여름은 밤 10시까지 하지만 겨울엔 짧아서 8시까지 한다. 아침 8시 30분에 도착했는데 문은 9시에 연다. 많은 사람들이 문 열기를 기다리고 있었다. 티켓을 사고 팸플릿을 받았다. 그리도 유명하고 그리도 기대했던 디즈니랜드에 발을 들여놓은 것이다. 그러나 기대에 못 미치는 곳, 너무나 눈에 익어서 그런가? 팸플릿에는 디즈니랜드의 지도와 놀이시설의 이름, 프로그램이 나와 있었다. 그러나 제목으로는 어떤 내용인지 알 수가 없었다.

가장 잘 알려진 신데렐라, 피노키오, 피터팬... 그런 종류의 놀이기구를 탔다. 일명 환상의 섬(Fantasy Land)이라는 곳에서. 아침 일찍 갔기 때문에 그리 오래 기다리지는 않았고 그런대로 재미도 있었다. 그다음엔 어디로 가야 할지, 이리저리 헤매기 시작한다.

엽이 땅바닥에 주저 앉는다. 다리가 아프단다. 암담해지기 시작한다. 가방에 항상 넣고 다니던 '자신만만 세계여행'책을 오늘은 놓고 왔던 것이다. 그냥 눈에 띄는 대로 들어가자.

한 곳에 갔더니 사람들이 줄을 서고 있다. 옳지 저리로 가자. 그곳은 디즈니 만화에 나오는 캐릭터들이 있었고 방문자 한 사람 한 사람에게 악수를 하고 머리를 쓰다듬어 주며 같이 사진을 찍을 수 있도록 해주었다. 우리가 만난 것은 미키, 미니마우스, 다른 집에는 아마 다른 캐릭터들이 있을 거란 생각이 든다. 한참 기다렸다 악수하고 사진 찍고, 별로 구미가 당기지 않는다.

그곳을 벗어나 걷다 보니 기차 소리가 들린다. 이 기차는 디즈니 랜드를 이리저리 옮겨 다니기 좋다. 기차를 타니 언덕 아래로 디즈니랜드가 한눈에 들어온다. 기차를 타고 가는 중간중간 그랜드 케년의 광경, 박제된 동물들을 볼 수 있다.

기차는 경쾌한 기적소리를 낸다. 휴, 아팠던 다리를 쉬게 하며 사람 구경하며 가는 기분도 좋다. 무작정 앉아있다 보니, 뮤지컬 공연 모습이 보인다. 그 역에서 내려 공연장 의자에 앉는다. 어이구, 이런 곳도 있었구나. 아픈 다리를 한 동안 쉬게 할 수도 있고 공연을 보고 준비한 김밥도 먹을 수 있는 좋은 기회였다.

디즈니 만화의 모든 캐릭터들이 나와 신나게 노래를 부른다. 오페라가 끝나면 예쁜 색종이가 관람석 아래로 떨어져 내려온다. 유진, 재엽은 색종이 줍느라 분주하다.

또 어디로 갈까? 기차를 타고 한 곳에 내린다. 청룡 열차류의 탈것이 많다. 제일 만만한 것을 골라본다. 유진이는 무섭다고 안 타겠단다. 한쪽에 "꼼짝 말고 있으라"라고 앉혀놓고 놀이기구를 타러 올라간다.

시간이 지남에 따라 사람들이 꽤 많아서 한참 기다려야 했다. 재엽과 같이 타려 했으나 열차 타는 순서와 인원에 걸려서 재엽이가 탄 그 다음다음에 타야 했다. 시커먼 굴을 빙빙 돌다 아래로 푹 떨어지고 또 위로 솟아올랐다. 쌩쌩 달린다. '엽이 무섭다고 하겠는데.' 슬슬 걱정이 된다.

한 바탕 요동 끝에 놀이기구에서 내리는데 귀에 익숙한 울음소리가 들린다. 두리번거리며 울고 있는 엽. 왜 울었는지 물으니, 엄마가 자기 뒤에 탔다고 생각했는데 내려보니 엄마가 없어서 타다가 떨어졌는 줄 알았단다. 엽을 달래며 얼른 진이를 찾으러 간다. 진이가 시야에 들어오는 순간부터 진이 이름을 부른다.

잠시라도 빨리 엄마의 존재를 알려 두려움으로부터 해방시켜주려는 갸륵한 엄마의 마음. 걱정스러운 엄마의 마음과는 달리 진이는 팝콘을 먹으며 빙긋 웃는다.

날이 점점 어두워진다. 말이 끄는 마차를 타고 오페라 하우스라는 곳에 왔다. 오페라 하우스가 오페라 공연하는 곳인 줄 알았다. 내부로 들어가니 한쪽에는 기념품 가게가 있고 벽에는 디즈니의 일생을 보여주는 패널이 걸려 있다.

왠지 텅 빈 느낌이다. 오페라 하우스의 또 다른 입구에 많은 사람들이 줄을 서고 있었다. 뭔가 재미있는 곳인가 보다. 무작정 줄을 선다. 그러나 줄이 줄어들지 않는다. 그래도 기다렸다. 엽은 다리가 아프다고 칭얼거린다. 업었다. 허리 아프다. 내려놓았다. 졸린단다. 다시 업었다.

약 2시간을 기다린 끝에 오페라 하우스에 들어갔다. 으응? 뭐가 이래? "여기가 뭐 하는 곳입니까?" 무슨 카드를 만드는 곳이란다. "그럼 오페라 공연 안 해요?" 중국계로 보이는 카드 담당자는 어이가 없다는 표정을 지으며, " 오페라 하는 줄 알고 2시간을 기다렸단 말이요?"하고 웃는다. Oh, my god! 바보. 잃어버린 내 시간 돌려줘~

Jan. 3rd , 2000 Disneyland

We are going to Disneyland today. My sister and I thought about how we are going to go there. My sister promised to drive up there in the morning and pick us up in the evening. Yesterday, my brother-in-law, my sister and I went there to be prepare for today.

My sister didn't know the way there so she learn the way from my brother-in-law by driving there together with him before for today. I was thankful but felt sorry that they had to do all that. My brother-in-law leaves early in the morning for work and willingly helps me in the evening.

In summer, Disneyland is open till 10:00 p.m., but in winter they close the door at 8:00 p.m. We arrived at 8:30 a.m. Many people were waiting by the entrance. I bought tickets and received pamphlets. I stepped into Disneyland that I had heard so much about and anticipated visiting. But it did not live up to my expectations. Maybe it's because I've seen pictures of it and read about it so much before.

In the pamphlet, there were maps, the name of rides and programs. But I couldn't tell what they were about just by seeing the names. I rode the most famous rides, such as Cinderella, Pinoccio, Peter Pan, etc. at Fantasy Land. I didn't wait too long because I came here early in the morning. it's fun.

I was wondering where I should go next. I looked around here and there. Jae Yup sits down on the ground. He said his legs ached. It looks gloomy. I left my guide book (Self-Confident World Travel book) that I always keep in my bag in my sister's room. 'Let's just go wherever.

I found a place which had a long line. "OK, let's go there." There were Disney characters in there. They shook hands with every visiter, pet children's heads and let the guests take pictures with them. We met Micky and Mini Mouse. Maybe there are another characters in other houses, I guessed. After a long wait, you got to shake hands and take pictures with them. I didn't find it all that appealing.

When we got out of there, I heard the sound of a train. This train is very convenient to get around Disney Land. I can see the whole Disney Land below the hill. I could see the miniature Grand Canyon, many stuffed animals as rolled along on the train. The train let out a cheerful whistle.

Whew, in the train, I can let my legs rest. And it's nice to do some people-watching. As I sat down with no specific plan, I could see a musical performance. I got out of the station and sat down on a bench there. Wow, a nice place! I can rest my legs for a while, enjoy a musical and enjoy the Kimpap I prepared for lunch. Most of the Disney cartoon characters came out, playing and singing merrily. After the performance, beautiful colored paper flew out to the benches. Yoo Jin and Jae Yup were busy picking them up.

Where to next? I went off to somewhere else on the train. Many rides were there. I picked a ride that is easier to take. Yoo Jin said she wouldn't go on, saying that she is afraid. We went up to take a ride after I sat Yoo Jin in a place and told her to stay put. As time went by, the line for the ride grew. So, I had to wait for a long time. I tried to go on the same unit with Jae Yup, but I couldn't because of the seating capacity and boarding order. I had to go on the next one, one right after Jae Yup's. The ride went through a dim tunnel, dropped down and shot up. It runs fast. "I think Jae Yup might be scared by the ride", I worried.

After a few rounds, I got off. As I was getting off the ride, I heard a familiar cry. Oh, Jae Yup was crying and looking around. I asked why was he crying. He said he thought I was right behind him; but after he got off the ride, he found I wasn't there. He thought I fell off the ride to the ground.

I calmed him down and went to look for Yoo Jin. I called out, "Yoo Jin", as soon as I found her. It's mother's love that tries to let the parted child know that the mother is near by as soon as possible. Yoo Jin smiles at me eating pop corn and oblivious of my concerns.

It became darker and darker. We went to the Opera House on a two-horse carriage. I misunderstood the Opera house to be a place where opera is performed. Inside the Opera House, there were gift shops on the corner and some panels with the history of Disney were written on were hang on the wall. It felt empty and bare. There was a long line at the other entrance of the house. Maybe something interesting is taking place. I stood in line without thinking about it. But the line wouldn't move, even though I waited. Jae Yup frets, saying his legs ache. I picked him up piggyback. My back aches. I put him down. He said he was sleepy. I picked him up piggyback again.

We got into the Opera House after waiting for 2 hours. "What, What's this? What is this place for?" The staff said this is a place for making cards. "Then you don't do Opera?" The card staff who looked to be a Chinese-american said in blank dismay, "Have you waited for 2 hours expecting to see an Opera?" Oh my gosh! "Please return my lost time."
