한번 다운타운에 다녀왔던 경험도 있고, 언니도 안심시킬 겸 나의 용기도 과시할 겸 당당한 모습으로 길을 떠난다. 역시 배낭 가득 하루의 식량을 넣고. 정말 와보고 싶던 곳이다. 아이들이 좋아하는 공룡을 비롯하여 코끼리, 타조, 하이에나, 무스, 너구리 등 온갖 종류의 동물이 실제 모습처럼 전시되어있다.

갑자기 전시장이 떠나갈 듯한 사이렌 소리가 들린다. 관람객이 전시된 동물에 지나치게 접근하는 것을 막기 위해 파이프로 막아놓았는데 한눈을 판 사이 엽이는 파이프 밑으로 기어 들어갔던 것이다. 후다다닥. 파이프 밖으로 뛰쳐나온 엽은 거의 혼이 빠진 듯하다. 잠시 진정을 시키고 주의를 준다.

2층으로 올라가니 유치원생쯤 되어 보이는 한 무리의 꼬마들이 선생님과 함께 올라와 관찰을 한다. 이곳에서는 공룡뼈를 직접 만져 볼 수 도 있고 공룡뼈를 발굴하는 과정을 실험할 수 있는 곳이 인기가 있었다. 꼬마들은 삽으로 모래를 떠내고 붓으로 공룡뼈를 살살 털어냈다. 또 벌레를 관찰할 수 있도록 현미경도 있었고, 구렁이류도 많았다.

잠시 의자에 앉아 있는데 한 남자가 다가와 말을 건다."일본인이십니까?" 그는 일본 여자와 살고 있고 자기는 캐나다 사람이고 건축일을 한다고 한다. 미국인에 대해 어떻게 생각하느냐고 묻길래 친절하고 착해 보인다고 대답하니, NO, 미국인은 굉장히 냉정하다. 친절해 보이고 신사 같아 보여도 정반대의 모습을 가진 사람들이 바로 미국인이다. 사람 너무 믿지 말라."라고 자못 심각하게 말한다. 내가 그렇게 순진하게 생긴 걸까? 그는 자기의 딸에게 '가라테'를 가르쳐주었다며 그의 딸을 불러 시범을 보이게 한다.

또 한 군데의 전시실로 갔더니 오색찬란한 돌들이 있다. 세계 각지에서 진귀한 보석들이 반짝반짝 자태를 자랑한다. 난 개인적으로 보석을 그리 탐내지는 않는다. 그러나 그 보석들을 보는 순간 이래서 여자들이 보석을 좋아하나란 생각이 들 정도로 황홀하다.

한 남자가 대형 모니터 앞에서 금 캐내는 광경을 보고 있다. 다리도 아프고 해서 그 자리에 주 질러 앉는다. 엽이도 앉고, 진도 앉는다. 잠시 후 셋은 그 자리에서 자고 있었다.

I left home with an air of adventurous dignity to build on my LA downtown experience, put my sisiter's nervousness about my traveling at ease and to display my courage. In addition to the dinosaur exhibit that children liked, they displayed all kind of stuffed animals, such as an elephant, an ostrich, a hyena, a moose, a raccoon, etc. They looked just like the real ones.

Suddenly, l heard a siren ringing very loud. They protect the animals with pipes to prevent the visitors from getting too close. But Jae Yup went under the pipe while I was enjoying other animals. Freightened by the siren, Jae Yup got out of there in a hurry. I calmed him down and cautioned him.

When I went up to the second floor, many kids with their teachers were observing something. You can actually touch the dinosaur bones. The children seem to enjoy digging out the dinosaur bones from the ground. Some children got out the sand using spades and brushing the sand away from the bones. They could also see insects through microscopes, and there were many kinds of serpents.

While I took a rest on the bench, a man asked me, " Are you Japanese?" He said he is a Canadian married to a Japanese woman and worked in construction. He asked how I felt about Americans. I answered Americans seemed kind and gentle to me. "No, American are cold. Even though they look nice and gentle, they have an opposite side. Don't trust them." He said all that very seriously. I asked myself, "Do I look that naive.?" He also said that he taught his daughter Karate. He called his daughter over and asked her to demonstrate her skills.

I went to another showing room. They displayed many jewels from all over the world, which were shining brightly. They all boasted their beauty. I, personally, have no desire for jewels. However, as I look at them, I can see why some women lust after jewels.

A man was watching someone digging for gold on a big monitor. I sat down because I was so tired and my legs ached. Jae Yup and Yoo Jin sat down, too. After a while, we all fell asleep.
