동화 속을 달리는 기분이군. San Marino는 돈 많은 미국인들이 사는 동네이다. 점차 동양인들이 파고들어 자존심 강한 미국인들이 하나 둘 이 곳을 떠나고 있다. 그 아름다운 마을에 헌팅턴 라이브러리가 자리하고 있다. 깨끗하고 화려해 보이는 방문객들의 발걸음이 가벼워 보인다.
헌팅턴 라이브러리는 19세기 철도회사 사장의 개인 저택으로 그 규모가 엄청나다. 그는 1850년 뉴욕에서 태어나 샌프란시스코에서 철도회사를 운영하는 그의 삼촌을 도왔다. 20년 후 그의 삼촌으로부터 철도회사의 지분을 받기 위해 샌프란시스코로 여행하던 중 산 마리노를 지나게 되고 그 지역에 매력을 느껴 산 마리노 땅을 사게 된다.
1900년과 1910년 사이에 회사의 규모가 3배로 확장될 정도로 그의 경영 능력을 탁월했다. 60세에 남은 여생을 책과 예술품을 모으는데 전념했고 63세에 삼촌의 미망인인 아라벨라 듀발과 결혼해 그녀와 함께 희귀본과 걸작품을 수집했다. 69세에 그들의 재산을 비영리 단체에 기부함으로써 오늘날의 헌팅턴 라이브러리가 된 것이다.
이곳엔 미술관, 도서관, 식물원이 있으며 매년 50만 명이 이곳을 방문한다. 우선 미술관에 들어가 본다. 그곳엔 영국의 귀족 풍이 풍겨 나는데 18∼19세기 영국과 프랑스의 예술품이 전시되어 있다. 문 앞에 깨끗하게 정장을 차려입은 몸집 큰 노신사가 딱 버티고 있다. 너무나 위엄이 있어 모기 만한 목소리로 물어본다. "들어가도 돼요?"
전시실과 복도에 귀족풍의 할아버지들이 서 있다. 이 노신사들은 헌팅턴에 애정을 갖고 있는 그 지역의 자원봉사자들이다. 벽에는 미술품이 걸려있다. 넋을 빼고 본다. 너무나 감동적이다. 또다시 행복해진다. 그냥 하염없이 그대로 서 있고 싶다. 또한 르네상스 시대의 그림, 18세기 프랑스 조각품, 태피스트리, 도자기, 가구들이 전시되어있다.
다음은 도서관으로 간다. 헌팅턴 라이브러리는 문화적, 교육적으로 미국에서 알아주는 도서관이다. 이곳엔 영국과 미국의 역사와 문학서를 대량 소유하고 있으며 희귀본과 앵글로 아메리칸의 문화를 다룬 문학작품이 많다. 특히 초서의 캔터베리 이야기의 원본, 구텐베르크 성경이 있다. 또한 캘리포니아 골드러시를 보여주는 전시관이 있어 캘리포니아 발전과정을 엿볼 수 있다.
전시관을 나와 식물원으로 발길을 돌린다. 일 년 내내 꽃이 피어 변함없는 생동감을 간직한 곳이다. 총 207 에이커 중 130 에이커에 15개의 특별한 이름을 지닌 정원이 캘리포니아의 짙푸른 하늘 아래 끝없이 펼쳐진다. 아, 눈부신 아름다움이여. 한 쌍의 남녀가 야자수 아래에 누워있다. '청춘이 부럽군'. '히이∼, 나도 누워 봐야지.' 진아, 너도 누워.

I feel as if I'm in a storybook. San Marino is an exclusively white and affluent residential area. As Asians move into the area, affluent and conservative white Americans leave the area one by one. It is in this beautiful town that Huntington Hills is located.
Smiling and cheerful visitors seem to be very pleased with the place. Huntington Hills was originally a personal mansion of the railway company president, Huntington in the 19 century. The place is grandiose.
He was born in 1850 in New York and worked for his uncle who was the owner of a railway company in San Francisco. Twenty years later, he traveled to San Francisco to receive his share of the company from his uncle. On the way to San Francisco, he passed through San Marino, felt its charm and bought some land in San Marino.
His management talent was evident by the fact that the company tripled in size between 1900 and 1910. From 60 years of age, he devoted himself to collecting books and art masterpieces. At 63, he married his uncle's widow, Arabella Duval and collected rarities and masterpieces with her. They donate their belongs to a nonprofit organization, which became Huntington Hills of today. There is an art museum, library and botanical garden around the hills, and five hundred thousand people visit here every year.
A large elderly man in a clean uniform stood at the entrance of the gallery. Because of his imposing appearance, I asked in a very soft voice, " May I go in?" As I stepped into the art museum, I got a "whiff" of the British nobility. There were also the 18th and 19th century French and English works of art.
Elegant elderly men stood here and there in the exhibition halls and hallway. They were volunteers of this town working out of love of Huntington Hills.
Works of art were hunging on the wall. I was captivated by the pictures. They were moving and I was happy again. I wanted to while away the hours there. They also showed the pictures from the Renaissance, sculptures of the 18 century France, tapestry, ceramics and furniture.
Next we went to the library. The Huntington Library is famous in America for its cultural and educational value. They have many history books and much literature from England and America. They also had rare books and Anglo-American literature. For example, the original version of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Johannes Gutenberg's Bilble. There also was an exhibition that showed the development of California during the gold rush era.
We got out of the gallery, and Yoo Jin and I headed for the gardens. With no seasonal changes, this place must be a ceaselessly vibrant place. On 130 acres out of 207 acres estate, 15 different gardens spread out endlessly under the deep blue California sky. Oh, what dazzling beauty! A couple laid down under a palm tree. How I envy youngsters! Hee~ 'I will lay down, too.' "Yoo Jin , you lay down, too."
