나이아가라 폭포 2000. 1. 22
Continental Breakfast를 먹고 차에 올랐다. 미국 쪽 나이아가라에서 내렸다. 진, 엽은 춥다고 운다.
이렇게 추운 곳을 데려왔다고 엄마를 원망한다. 아무리 좋은 것이라도 받아들이는 편의 자세에 따라 괴로운 것일 수 있다.
워싱턴에서 여기까지 약 9시간을 달려왔는데, 얘들아 제발 좀 봐라. 으름짱도 놓고 구슬려서 폭포를 보여준다. 어제부터 갑자기 추워졌다고 하고 그래서인지 얼음덩이가 둥둥 떠내려간다. 시원한 물살. 아! 속이다 시원하다. 이제야 여기에 온 보람이 생긴다. 얼음덩이 고드름이 여기저기 떨어져 있다. 춥다. 그래도 좋다. 춥지만 않다면 오래 머무르고 싶지만 따뜻한 게 좋다. 후다닥 차에 오르고 다음 장소. 폭포의 모습이 전체적으로 보인다. 생각보다 높지 않다.
이제 미국 쪽을 벗어나 캐나다로 간다. 물안개가 높이 올라가 있다. 엽이는 춥다고 징징거린다. 엽이를 안아서 폭포물 떨어지는 곳에 얼굴을 밀어 넣는다. "와!" (엽의 두 번째 탄성) 진도 보겠다고 한다. 진이도 들어준다. 물보라가 바람에 날려 난간에 닿고 추운 날씨에 곧 얼어붙는다. 난간은 얼음덩어리라서 기댈 수도 가까이가 기도 어렵다.
다음은 뉴욕으로 간다. 자꾸 문제를 일으켜 가며 가며 점검을 받던 Ford차가 마침내 완전히 고장 나 버렸다. 연기를 풀 풀내며 조금씩 끌고 가는데 이 모습을 보던 빨간 잠바의 미국인이 와서 우리를 도와준다. Pick up트럭에 고리를 만들어 밧줄로 7명이 타고 있는 우리 차를 끌고 간다. pick up트럭이 이렇게 힘이 좋은가? 가까운 정비공장에 차를 대고 K 씨는 여행사에 차를 갖다 달라는 주문.
미안해하는 K. 시간은 1시간 2시간 지나더니 잠시 장소를 옮기잔다. 그 동네의 주민이 우리를 태워 어는 식당에 내려놓는다. 우리를 태워준 미국인 할아버지는 그 차가 12년 되었다고 한다. 자신은 76세라고 하고. 12년 된 차가 얼마나 조용하고 부드러운지 감탄할 만하다. 아름다운 석양을 바라본다. 그러다 조금씩 화가 난다. 머리가 지끈 거린다. 약 6시간을 묶여있다가 드디어 대체 차량이 왔다. 가이드 2는 기분 풀라며 노래방이 있으니 노래를 하고 싶으면 하란다. 좋은 음악이나 틀어보랬더니.... 정말 내 취향이 아니군.
거의 12시에 가까워져 Holliday Inn 호텔에 도착했다. 여행사 직원은 투명한 플라스틱 컵에 사탕을 몇 개 넣고 반짝이로 장식을 해서 엽이에게 건넨다. 감격하는 엽과 진. "저 아저씨 되게 착하다. 그렇지." 아이고 죽겠다. 자자.
Jan. 22nd, 2000 Niagara Fall
I got in the car after a continental breakfast. We got off at the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. Yoo Jin and Jae Yup cried, saying they were cold. They reproached me for bringing them to such a cold place. Even a good comment can be annoying depending on ones mood. Children, look at the falls, please.
We drove here for 9 hours from Washington D.C. I had to apply pressure to get them to see the falls. Pieces(=Chunks) of ice were flowing down the fall. It was reported that the weather became very cold since yesterday. The current was swift. How I'm refreshed! I now feel that it was worth coming here.
Many icicles have fallen and scattered here and there. It was cold. It's good even though it is cold. I wanted to stay a little longer, but I prefer a warn place. So, I got in the car in a hurry and started for another place. I can see the whole falls.
It wasn't as high as I had expected. We headed for the Canadian side and left the American side. A big mist showed up. A cold weather made Jae Yup grummble. I pick him up and showed him the falls. Wow! (Jae Yup's second admiration). Yoo Jin insist on seeing the falls. I picked her up to show her the falls.
Spray of water lands on the railing and immediately freeze because of the cold weather. I can't get close to or lean against to the railing because it is icy.
Next, we headed for New York. Our Ford car, which had been checked from time to time during our trip, had totally broken down. ( FORD stand for Found On the Road Dead. ) An American who was wore red jumper helped us when our car was somking. He took out a chain and connected our car, which held 7 people, to his pick up truck. Is the pickup truck that strong?
K asked the travel agency to deliver another car after he parked his car at a nearby service center. He looked like he was sorry. An hour or two went by, then K asked us to move to another place. An American who lives in town picked us up and brought us to a restaurant.
The elderly American said he drove his car for 12 years. And he also said he was 76 years old. His car ran quitely and smoothly. His car was wonderful even though his car was old. I saw a beautiful sunset. And then I got upset and later my head ached. At last, another car has come after we waited for 6 hours.
L, the friend of the guide, said to relax and sing a song because they have a karaoke(singing machine). I asked him to play a good song, but it wasn't exactly my kind of song.
We arrived at the Holliday Inn around 12:00 p.m. A travel agency staff was waiting, holding a clear plastic cup which held some candies wraped in shinny wrappers. And he gave the cup to Jae Yup. Oh, Jae Yup and Yoo Jin liked that. " That man is so nice , isn't he? I am dead tired. Let's sleep."
