호텔을 나와 뉴욕을 향한다. '아! 이렇게 해서 오늘로 동부를 떠나는구나. 맨해튼은 아름다운 도시임에는 틀림없지만 도시 곳곳에 쓰레기가 쌓였다. 이렇게 아름다운 도시를 왜 가꾸지 않는 걸까? 샌프란 시스코와 비교하자면 샌프란 시스코는 아름답고 깨끗하다. 맨해튼은 아름답고 답답하고 지저분하고 음울하다.
K 씨가 열심히 설명은 하지만 기억에 남는 건 별로 없다. 단지 눈으로 본 것을 기억에 넣는 수밖에. 10시 30분에 허드슨 강에서 유람선을 탔다. 강물도 더럽다. 어떤 남자가 한 무리의 한국인 관광객이 오는 것을 보고 애국가와 아리랑을 바이올린으로 연주한다. 1달러를 그에게 건네자 슬며시 주머니에 넣는다. 동전은 그대로 두고 지폐는 주머니로 가는가 보다. 하늘은 잔뜩 찌프러져 있고 날씨는 을씨년스럽다. 자유의 여신상이 흐릿하게 시야에 들어온다.
유람선을 탔다. 자유의 여신상은 프랑스에서 만들어 미국 독립 100주년 기념으로 주었다. 분해되어 운반된 자유의 여신상을 설치하기 위해 필요한 자금을 모금하게 된다. 그러나 너무나 협조가 없어 100주년 때 설치하지 못했다. 이에 한 문필가가 신문에 성금을 촉구하는 글을 기고했고, 순식간에 모금액이 넘치게 걷어져 102년 되던 해 세워졌다. 문필의 힘. 뭐가 그리 대단한 걸까?
가이드의 설명은 부실하기 그지없다. 자유여신상에서 한번 유람선이 서고 다음은 앨리스 섬에서 선다. 유럽에서 생활의 터전을 잡지 못한 이들이 배를 타고 30~50일간 항해하다가 도착해 앨리스 섬에서 입국 심사를 받고 미국에 들어오는 통로다. 입국심사에 불합격되면 다시 배를 타고 본국으로 돌아가야 했다.
다음은 엠파이어스테이트 빌딩. 1930년 경제공황 때 지어진 것으로 사람들이 입주하지 않아 텅 비어 있었다. 그래서 Empire State Building을 Empty State Building(텅 빈 건물)이라고 불렀다. 그 당시 킹콩 영화를 찍어야겠는데 다른 건물들은 사람이 있지만 엠파이어는 사람이 없었기 때문에 여기에서 킹콩 영화를 찍었고 킹콩이 히트하면서 엠파이어가 맨해튼의 명물이 되었다.
다음은 UN본부로 간다. 가는 날이 장날이라고 유엔본부는 문이 닫혀있다. 국기도 다 내려있다. 계획성 없이 움직이는 동부 투어. 오후 3시 45분에 뉴웍 공항에 도착해 수속 마치고 대기실에 서니 4시. 5시 5분에 탐승 시작한다고. 예의 그 착한 아저씨는 진이와 엽에게 장난감 하나씩을 안긴다. 마음이 조금 풀린다.
5시 35분이 되어서야 탐승을 시킨다. 미국도 시간 안 지키는구나. 맛있는 기내식을 먹으며 시간을 보내는데 기장의 소리; Rocky Mountains(로키산맥)의 구름과 바람 때문에 연착되겠단다. 맞다. 올 때의 그 모습이 그랜드캐년이었나 보다. 비행기를 타고 올 때 날씨가 화창해 거대한 자연을 훑어볼 수 있었다. (망원경이 있었다면 얼마나 좋았을꼬.)
LAX에 도착하자마자 보름달 같은 언니의 얼굴이 보인다. 반가워하는 언니, "너 연락 없어서 죽었는 줄 알았다. 어쩜 그렇게 연락을 안 하니. TV 보니까 동부에 갑작스러운 한파가 몰아쳤다고 해서 엽이와 진이 옷 좀 사 입히라고 말하고 싶어도 영 연락이 와야지. 내가 얼마나 걱정했는 줄 알아!"'미안, 그렇지만 애들도 고생을 좀 해야 돼."

최 선생에게 연락이 왔다. 여행에 대해 어서 보고를 하란다. 서부 가이드와 동부 가이드에 대해 이야기한다. 최 선생은 그리니치 천문대에서 3시간 넘게 차근차근 두 아이에게 설명했던 한 대학교수에 대해 말한다. 겨우 두 아이를 위해서, 아이들은 딴전 보고 관심을 보이지 않지만 그래도 하나하나 실습해보게 하고 천체망원경까지 보게 해 주었다는 얘기를.
이런 것이 프로정신이 아닐까. 미국의 힘이 이런 것이 아닐까. 내일은 게티센터를 가 보리라. 아이들이 안 간다면 혼자라도 가야지. 몇 번 망설인다. '내일 한국에 갈까? 샌디에이고 갈까?'
내일 게티센터 가고 모레 1박으로 샌디에이고 가기로 결심.

We headed for New York after we left the hotel. Ah, today is the last day of my eastern US tour and I will leave here. Manhattan is surely a beautiful city, but there was much trash scattered here and there. Why aren't the people concerned about cleaning such a beautiful city?
Compared with Sanfrancisco, San Francisco was much more beautiful and clean. Manhathan is beautiful, stuffy, messy and gloomy. K guided well but there is nothing left in me. I just put them in my memory through my eyes. I went aboard a pleasure boat at 10;30 a.m. The river water isn't clean.
A man was playing the Korean national anthem and "A-ri-rang", korean folk song on the violine when he saw a group of korean tourists came close to him. I gave him a dollar and he quitely put the money in his pocket. Maybe he put coins in the dish and bills in his pocket.
The sky was gloomy and the weather was miserable. The Statue of Liberty came into view. We went aboard a pleasure boat. The Statue of Liberty was made in France and awarded to the USA as a Centennial gift. The government ask money from the people to set the statue, but they didn't gather enough money because of the lack of help of the citizens. So, they didn't set up it during the Centennial. At this, a writer wrote to a paper to persuade the people to give money. After that, much money had gethered and the statue was set on the 102nd year of their independence. How powerful is the power of writing!
At that time, King Kong, the movie was made in the Empire State Building. It's because all the big buildings were occupied with many people inside them, but the Empire State Building was empty. As King Kong became a hit, the Empire State Building became a landmark in Manhattan.
Next, we headed for the U. N. Headquarters. Wouldn't you know it, it was closed. All the national flags were down. Badly planned eastern US tour!
My children and I arrived in Newark International Airport at 3:45 p.m., and it was 4:00 p.m. when we cleared customs. They say we were supposed go aboard at 5:05 p.m. The kind man gave Yoo Jin and Jae Yup each a doll. I was unwinding.
They didn't let us go aboard the plane until 5:35 p.m. Americans don't keep time, either. Just when I was enjoying my meal, the pilot anounced that the plane will be delayed because of the wind and cloud of the Rocky Mountains. I was right! My guess that the canyon beneath the plane was the Grand Canyon was correct.
When we flew to the East Coast, the weather was fine and I could enjoyed the beautiful nature of America.
I saw the moon resembling my sisiter's face when we got to LAX. My sister was very happy to meet us. "I thought you died because you haven't been in touch with me while you were on your trip. Why didn't you call me until now? I heard on TV that there is a coldfront sweeping through the East Coast. I tried to reach you and tell you to buy some warm clothes for Yoo Jin and Jae Yup. Do you know how much I worried about you?" I said, " Sorry, the children had to it hard sometime." It took 5 and a half hours from the East Coast to the West Coast.
Mrs. Choi called me. She asked me to tell her about my trip to the East Coast. I told her about the difference between the western guide and the eastern guide.

Mrs. Choi told me about a professor who gave a through over-three-hour lesson at Grinich Observatory to two children. For only two children! Children didn't pay attention, but he did his best to give the children some hands-on experience, including letting the children look into the terristerial telescope. Maybe this is the professional spirit. Maybe it is the very strength of America.
I will fo Getty Center tomorrow. If the children won't come along, I will go by myself. I hesitated about my schedule. "Should I go to Korea or San Diego tomorrow?" I decided to go to Getty Center tomorrow and go to San Diego the next morning.
