예술이 왜 중요한가?
이 질문에 대한 답은 인간 존재의 가장 근본적인 모순에서 찾을 수 있다.
인간은 육체적 한계와 영적 무한성이 만나는 지점에 서 있다. 육체는 유한한 물질로 만들어져 시간의 흐름과 공간의 제약 안에서 살아간다. 거기서 부딪히는 모든 벽은, 넘어설 수 없는 고통스러운 현실이다. 하지만 그것을 느끼는 본질이 정확히 무엇인지는 알 수 없다. 이 모순적 존재가 바로 인간이다.
나는 '눈물'이 인간을 잘 설명한다고 생각한다. 기쁨이 넘칠 때도, 슬픔이 넘칠 때도, 억울함과 분노가 어느 선을 넘어설 때도 눈물은 흘러나온다.
눈물. 소금과 물.
소금은 짠맛을 내는 인간의 현실적 고통과 고뇌, 육체가 느끼는 삶의 감각적 현실을 대변한다. 고통은 부정할 수 없는 인간의 본질이다.
물은 영혼처럼 잡힐 듯 형태가 있을 듯하지만 없다. 하지만 없다고 할 수도 없는, 부정할 수도 없는, 인간의 또 하나의 본질이다. 이 두 가지가 섞여 눈물처럼 진실한 형태로 드러나는 것, 그것이 예술이다.
예술가가 중요할까? 예술이 중요할까?
나는 예술이 중요하다고 생각한다. 효율성으로 따지면 눈물만큼 쓸모없는 것도 없다. 하지만 눈물 없는 인간을 상상할 수 있는가? 눈물이야말로 인간이 인간일 수 있는 마지막 증거다.
예술도 마찬가지다.
예술은 인간의 깊숙한 존재 형태에 가장 가까운 진실이다. 자기가 예술가라고 떠드는 재능 있는 사람들을 이야기하는 것이 아니다. 삶에서 태어난 그 무엇, 소금만도 아닌 물만도 아닌 그 소금물이 바로 예술이다. 그리고 그것이 진정으로 진실한 목소리로 소통될 때, 서로의 소금물이 진동한다.
인간의 깊은 고뇌와 현실적인 삶의 부딪힘, 그 영혼의 진실성에서 태어난 눈물. 소금물 같은 작품을 마주했을 때 감동이 있는 것이다.
그들의 눈물로 내 눈물을 아는 것, 그것이 소통이다. 그 소통은 혼자가 아니라는 증거이며, 존재의 확인이며,
가장 인간다운 진실된 표현이다. 이것이 진정한 예술의 가치이고 중요성이다.
눈물은 만들어낼 수 없다.
인간의 삶에서 우러나는 그 진실을 가짜로 만들 때, 우리는 말하지 않아도 알아차린다. 예술은 인간 존재의 본질 그 자체이며, 육체적 한계와 영적 무한성이 만나는 그 접점에서 태어나는 가장 인간다운 표현이다.

Art x Shift
Why is art important? The answer to this question can be found in the most fundamental contradiction of human existence.
Human beings stand at the intersection where physical limitations meet spiritual infinity. The body is made of finite matter, living within the constraints of time and space. Every wall we encounter there is a painful reality that cannot be overcome. Yet we cannot know exactly what the essence is that feels all this. This contradictory existence is precisely what makes us human.
I believe that tears explain everything about humanity itself. Whether overflowing with joy, drowning in sorrow, or when injustice and anger cross a certain line, tears flow. Tears are a combination of salt and water. Salt represents the realistic pain and anguish of human existence, the sensory reality of life that the body experiences—its bitter taste. Pain is an undeniable essence of being human. Water is like the soul: it seems to have form yet doesn't, seems graspable yet isn't, but cannot be denied as another undeniable essence of humanity.
When these two elements merge to create something as truthful as tears, that is art.
Is the artist important? Or is art important? I believe art is important. In terms of efficiency, nothing is as useless as tears. But can you imagine a human being without tears? Tears are the final proof that humans can be human. Art is the same. Art is the truth closest to humanity's deepest form of existence. I'm not talking about those talented individuals who boast about being artists. I'm speaking of something born from life itself—that salt water that is neither purely salt nor purely water—that is art.
And when this is communicated with a truly authentic voice, each other's salt water resonates. When we encounter tear-like works born from humanity's deep anguish and collision with the realities of life, from the truthfulness of the soul, there is emotion. Knowing my own tears through their tears—that is communication. That communication is proof we are not alone, confirmation of existence, and the most humanly truthful expression. This is the true value and
importance of art.
Tears cannot be manufactured. When we try to fake that truth that emerges from human life, we recognize it without words. Art is the very essence of human existence, the most truthful expression born at the intersection where physical limitations meet spiritual infinity.

We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
