거울에 비치는 모든 것을 담아라. 작가만 빼고
예술은 무섭도록 솔직하다.
거울 앞에 서면, 꾸며낸 얼굴도 보이지만 민낯 그대로도 마주하게 된다. 예술도 마찬가지다. 아무것도 숨기지 않고, 있는 그대로를 드러낸다. 그래서 작가가 큰 용기를 내어 자신의 이야기를 털어놓으면, 아이러니하게도 그 작품은 더 깊이 개인적인 것이 된다. 때로는 작가조차 모르는 자신의 모습까지 의도치 않은 것까지 담아버린다.
그런데 진정한 예술이 되려면, 작가는 사라져야 한다. 좋은 소설을 읽을 때 우리는 작가를 잊어버린다. 훌륭한 영화를 볼 때 감독이 보이지 않는다. 작가가 뒤로 물러설 때, 작품은 비로소 투명해진다. 좋은 창문은 바깥 풍경을 선명하게 보여주되, 창문 자체는 눈에 띄지 않는다.
“내가 뭘 말해야 할까? “가 아닌 “내가 어떻게 방해가 되지 않을까? “를 고민해야 한다. “거울에 비치는 모든 것을 담아라. 작가만 빼고.” 이것이 내가 믿는 예술의 본질이다. 거울은 모든 것을 비추지만 거울 자체는 보이지 않는다.
그렇게 작가가 사라지고 나면, 예술은 작가의 재능을 넘어서고 표현 기법을 넘어서서 스스로 가야 하는 곳으로 향한다. 예술의 투명함은 깨끗하다는 뜻이 아니다. 그것은 진실을 있는 그대로 받아들이는 것이다. 희망과 절망, 아름다움과 추함을 모두 담되, 작가의 편견이 그것을 왜곡하지 않는 것이다.
그래서 우리는 용기를 내야 한다. 완벽하게 진실을 볼 수 없어도, 진실을 보려고 애써야만 한다. 빛을 막아서는 것이 작가 스스로가 되지 않도록, 나를 통과한 진실이 누군가에게 닿을 수 있도록. 그 빛이 점점 멀리 퍼져나가, 어딘가의 어둠을 밝힐 수 있기를 바라본다.

Art Is Frighteningly Honest
When you stand in front of a mirror, you see both the face you’ve crafted and your bare, untouched self. Art is the same. It hides nothing and reveals everything just as it is. So when an artist gathers the courage to tell their story, paradoxically, the work often becomes even more personal. Sometimes, it reveals parts of the artist they themselves were unaware of—things unintended, things unspoken.
But for art to become truly meaningful, the artist must disappear. When we read a great novel, we forget the author. When we watch a brilliant film, we don’t see the director. Only when the artist steps back does the work become transparent. A good window shows the world outside with clarity—but the window itself goes unnoticed.
Instead of asking, “What should I say?” the artist should ask, “How can I avoid getting in the way?” “Reflect everything in the mirror—except the artist.” That is the essence of art I believe in. A mirror reflects everything around it, yet the mirror itself remains invisible.
Once the artist disappears, art moves beyond talent, beyond technique—it begins to go where it must go. Transparency in art does not mean cleanliness or perfection. It means accepting truth as it is. It means embracing both hope and despair, beauty and ugliness, without distorting them through the artist’s own biases.
That’s why we must be brave. Even if we cannot see the whole truth clearly, we must strive to see it. We must not become the ones who block the light. Only then can the truth that passes through us reach someone else. And that light, carried forward, may go on to illuminate some distant darkness.

변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다.
아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고,
예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
