다른 이의 자유까지 빼앗을 수 있는 자유
자유는 무섭다. 자유라는 말은 해방처럼 들리지만, 진정한 자유는 끝과 끝, 즉 최선과 최악 사이에서 모든 것을 선택할 수 있을 때 진정한 자유가 드러난다. 자유는 다른 이의 자유까지 빼앗을 수 있는 만큼 강력하다. 선택은 자유의 선물이지만 그 결과를 살아내야 하는 것은 숙명이다. 모든 선택의 결과는 결국 인생이 된다.
내 인생은 다른 이의 시작이 되기도 하기에 자유는 무서운 무게를 지닌다. 또한 선택은 언제나 잃음을 동반한다. 하나를 붙드는 순간 다른 하나는 버려진다. 그래서 어떤 기준을 두고 선택을 할 것인지는 너무 중요하다. 그래서 자유는 다루기 참 무섭다.
하지만 자유의 아름다움은 경이롭다. 자유는 진정성을 드러낸다. 자발적 선택은 사랑과 마음을 진정으로 담을 수 있는 유일한 그릇이다. 자유적 선택은 진심을 품는다. 빛이 프리즘을 통과해 새로운 색을 드러내듯, 명확한 기준을 가진 선택은 우리가 보지 못했던 수많은 가능성을 펼쳐 보인다. 하지만 기준점을 어디에 두고 선택할 것인지를 먼저 선택해야 한다. 차를 선택하기 전에 방향을 정하는 것이다.
우리는 악한 세상을 마주할 때 종종 신을 원망한다. 도대체 신은 무엇을 하냐고, 왜 이런 세상에 살아야 하냐고 묻는다. 그러나 만약 처음부터 좋은 선택지만 주어졌다면, 그 순간 우리의 자유는 이미 사라진 것이다. 내가 자유로 택한 결과가 설령 재앙일지라도, 그것은 완전한 자유가 주어졌다는 증거다. 악해진 세상에 할 말이 없지만, 수많은 선택은 이루어져 왔고 지금도 수많은 노력들로 세상은 숨을 쉬어가고 있다. 자유의 대가는 결과를 살아감이지만 인간을 인간답게 만들어간다.
자유의 기능과 선택의 결과를 받아들인다고 해도 고민은 끝나지 않는다. 양말을 신고 나가려 하는데 수많은 양말이 다 한 짝만 있다고 생각해 보라. 기준 없음은 양말 한 짝이 가득한 서랍장과 같다. 무엇을 골라도 완성될 수 없다. 선택의 기준을 고민하지 않는다면, 그 안에 나만의 정확한 이유를 담지 못한다면 무의미함을 벗어나기 어렵다.
무엇보다 그 기준이 모호한 '나' 자신이 되어서는 안 된다. 변덕스럽고 감정적이며 이기적일 수 있는 내 마음을 기준으로 삼는다면, 그것은 기준이 아니라 혼란이다. 진정한 선택의 기준은 나를 넘어서는 절대적 가치, 적어도 인간을 초월한 진리여야 한다. 그 기준은 내 안에서 발견된 것이 아닌 나를 넘어서는 무엇인가여야 한다. 그럴 때 비로소 우리의 자유는 방향을 찾고, 선택은 의미를 갖게 된다.

Art x Shift
Freedom is frightening.
The word sounds like liberation, yet true freedom is revealed only when one can choose between the extremes, between the best and the worst. Freedom is so powerful that it can even take away the freedom of others. Choice is the gift of freedom, but living with its consequences is destiny. Every choice becomes life itself.
My life can even become the beginning of another’s, and so freedom carries a fearful weight. Every choice also involves loss. The moment you hold on to one thing, another is left behind. That is why the standard by which we choose is so important. Freedom, for that reason, is truly frightening to handle.
Yet the beauty of freedom is awe-inspiring. Freedom reveals authenticity. Only a voluntary choice can become the vessel that truly holds love and sincerity. Free choice carries truth within it. Just as light passes through a prism to reveal new colors, a choice made with a clear standard can unfold countless possibilities we had not seen before. But first, we must choose where to place that standard. It is like setting the direction before choosing the car.
When we face an evil world, we often blame God. We ask, What is God doing? Why must we live in such a world? But if only good choices had been given from the beginning, then our freedom would already be gone. Even if the result of my free choice turns out to be disaster, it is still proof that complete freedom has been given. There is little to say in the face of a corrupted world, yet countless choices have already been made, and even now countless efforts allow the world to keep breathing. The cost of freedom is to live out its consequences, but that very burden is what makes us human.
Even if we accept the function of freedom and the outcome of our choices, the struggle does not end. Imagine wanting to put on socks, only to find a drawer full of mismatched pairs. Lack of standards is like such a drawer: whatever you pick, it can never be whole. If we do not wrestle with the standards of our choices, if we cannot place within them our own clear reasons, it is difficult to escape meaninglessness.
Above all, that standard must not be the vague and shifting self. If my own fickle, emotional, and selfish heart becomes the standard, then it is not a standard but confusion. The true standard of choice must be a value beyond myself, at least a truth greater than humanity. Such a standard is not something discovered within me, but something that transcends me. Only then will our freedom find its direction, and only then will our choices gain meaning.

We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
