커피 없이 할 수 있을까
Can we do it without coffee?
동대문 현대시티아울렛의 휴게공간을 제안받아 우리는 이곳에 두 번째 아트쉬프트를 만들었다. 지금 나는 백화점 한가운데 앉아 있다. 사람들은 에스컬레이터를 타고 끊임없이 올라온다. 엘리베이터조차 없던 을지로 5층 건물과 달리 이곳은 사람들로 가득하다. 나무판자 하나 올리기도 힘들었던 을지로와 비교할 수 없을 만큼 편리하고 지나가는 발걸음은 끝이 없다.
그러나 나는 엘리베이터 없는 5층보다 이곳이 더 어렵게 느껴진다. 을지로는 카페가 있었기에 사람들이 앉을 이유가 있었다. 대부분은 우리를 알고 찾아온 이들이었다. 하지만 이곳에서는 지나가는 발걸음을 멈춰야 한다. 처음 마주친 사람의 마음을 잠시 멈출 수 있을까. 커피 없이도 가능할까.
을지로에서는 “엘리베이터가 없어서 구석에 있어서 1층이 아니라서 사람들이 잘 모른다”는 말로 스스로를 위로할 수 있었다. 하지만 지금 이곳은 너무 완벽하다. 접근성도 좋고 사람도 많다. 그런데도 발걸음은 멈추지 않는다. 이제야 비로소 진짜 과제가 주어졌다.
이미 살 것이 있고 원하는 것이 분명한 이들에게 우리는 보이지 않는 것을 건넬 수 있을까. 그럼에도 이곳에서 그 일을 조금이라도 해낼 수 있다면 그 배움은 값질 것이다. 옛것이 가득한 을지로 속의 아트쉬프트, 새것이 가득한 백화점 속의 아트쉬프트. 우리는 여전히 배워가는 중이다.
예술은 늘 거대한 흐름 앞에서 작아 보인다. 휩쓸려 갈 것만 같지만 그래도 사라지지 않는다. 희미해도 괜찮다. 꺼지지만 않으면 여전히 빛이다. 예술이 크고 많은 일을 해내지 못하더라도 계속될 것이다.

Art x Shift
Invited to create a resting space inside Hyundai City Outlet in Dongdaemun, we built our second Art x Shift here. Now I sit in the middle of a department store. People rise endlessly on the escalators. Unlike our fifth-floor building in Euljiro, which had no elevator, this place is full of people. It’s convenient in every way, and the flow of footsteps never ends.
Yet I find this place more difficult than that fifth floor without an elevator. In Euljiro, there was a café, so people had a reason to sit. Most of them already knew us and came to find us. Here, however, we must stop the feet that are only passing by. Can we pause a stranger’s mind, even for a moment? Can we do it without coffee?
In Euljiro, we could comfort ourselves by saying, “There’s no elevator, it’s hidden, it’s not on the first floor, so people don’t know.” But this place is too perfect. It’s accessible, full of people, and yet no one stops. Only now do I realize what the real challenge is.
For those who already know what they want and what they came to buy, can we offer something invisible? Even if we manage to do it just a little, the lesson will be worthwhile. Art x Shift in Euljiro was surrounded by the old. Here, in the outlet, it’s surrounded by the new. We still have much to learn.
Art always looks small before the great flow. It may seem as if it will be swept away, but it never disappears. Even faint light is still light. As long as it doesn’t go out, it continues to shine. Even if art cannot do great or many things, it will endure.
