나비는 기억할까
Would the butterfly remember
애벌레는 알에서 나와 처음으로 빛을 본다. 작은 몸으로 잎 위를 기어 다니며 세상을 만난다. 햇빛을 느끼고, 이슬을 맛보고, 바람에 흔들린다. 애벌레는 먹고 자란다. 여러 번 허물을 벗는다. 조금씩 커진다. 그 시간이 전부인 줄 알고 산다. 땅 위의 세계가 자신이 아는 전부다. 그러나 어느 순간, 몸이 무거워진다. 더 이상 잎을 먹고 싶지 않다. 뭔가가 끝나가고 있다는 걸 느낀다. 애벌레는 조용히 멈춘다. 그리고 스스로를 가둔다.
번데기가 된다. 바깥에서 보면 죽은 것만 같다. 움직이지 않고, 먹지도 않고, 그저 매달려 있을 뿐이다. 고요하다. 멈춘 것 같다. 끝난 것만 같다. 하지만 그 안에서는 무언가가 일어나고 있다. 천천히, 보이지 않게. 애벌레의 형태가 해체된다. 그리고 다시 만들어진다. 다리가 사라지고 날개가 생긴다. 기어 다니던 몸이 날 수 있는 몸으로 변한다. 이건 성장이 아니다. 변형이다. 죽음처럼 보이는 그 고요 속에서, 가장 극적인 일이 벌어지고 있다.
어느 날, 번데기가 갈라진다. 나비가 천천히 나온다. 날개는 아직 축축하고 구겨져 있다. 햇빛이 스며든다. 날개가 펴지고, 마르고, 단단해진다. 그리고 나비는 날아오른다. 애벌레였을 때는 상상도 못 했던 방식으로 세상을 본다. 하늘이 있었다. 바람을 탈 수 있었다. 애벌레 시절은 낭비가 아니었다. 그 시간 동안 먹고 자란 모든 것이 지금의 날개를 만들었다. 번데기 속에서의 어둠도 끝이 아니었다. 그 고요 속에서 새로운 형태가 준비되고 있었다.
애벌레는 기다려야 한다. 번데기 안에서, 어둠 속에서. 억지로 나올 수 없다. 때가 되지 않았는데 껍질을 깨면 날개가 제대로 펴지지 않는다. 그래서 견딘다. 변화는 천천히 온다. 보이지 않게 온다. 애벌레가 잎을 먹으며 보낸 시간, 번데기 안에서 고요히 머문 시간, 그 모든 것이 필요했다. 첫 번째 삶이 있어야 두 번째 삶이 온다. 땅 위를 기어 다니는 시간이 하늘을 나는 날개를 만든다.
나비는 기억할까. 자신이 한때 땅 위를 기어 다녔다는 것을. 번데기 속에서 모든 것이 멈춰 있던 순간을. 그때는 끝인 줄 알았을 것이다. 하지만 그건 시작이었다. 가장 고요한 순간에 가장 깊은 변화가 일어났다. 애벌레는 두 번 난다. 한 번은 땅 위로, 한 번은 하늘로. 그렇게 거듭난다.

Art x Shift
The caterpillar breaks out of the egg and sees the world for the first time. With its small body, it crawls across a leaf, feeling sunlight, tasting dew, and swaying in the wind. It eats and grows, shedding its skin again and again. It lives as if that time and that world are everything. The small path it crawls on feels like the entire world. But one day its body becomes heavy, and it no longer wants to eat. Without knowing why, it senses that something is coming to an end. The caterpillar becomes still and begins to wrap itself.
It becomes a chrysalis. From the outside, it looks motionless. It does not eat, it does not move, it simply hangs. It seems as though nothing is happening and everything has ended. But inside, something invisible is taking place. The body of the caterpillar slowly dissolves and is formed again. Legs disappear and wings begin to emerge. The body that once crawled on the ground is transformed toward the open sky. This is not simple growth, but a complete change of being. It looks like death, yet the most dramatic transformation unfolds within that silence.
One day, the still chrysalis splits open. The butterfly slowly comes forth. Its wings are still damp and crumpled. Sunlight soaks in, the wings spread, dry, and grow firm. And finally, the butterfly takes flight. It sees the world in a way the caterpillar could never imagine. There was a sky. It could ride the wind. The time spent on the ground was not wasted. Every moment of eating and growing became the wings it now carries.
But wings are not made in haste. The darkness inside the chrysalis is a space of waiting. If the shell is forced open too early, the wings will not form correctly. Change arrives slowly. It arrives unseen. The time spent eating as a caterpillar, the quiet time inside the chrysalis, every stage was necessary. The first life makes the second possible. Only by crawling low can it someday rise high.
Would the butterfly remember that it once crawled across the earth, the moment when everything was still inside the chrysalis. It must have believed that was the end, but it was the beginning. In the quietest moment, the deepest transformation took place. A caterpillar is born twice, once to the earth, once to the sky, and thus, it becomes new.

We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
