The light in the depths
예술가들은 아래로 내려간다.
더 깊은 곳으로, 더 어두운 곳으로 내려가며 깊이에 집중한다. 바깥에선 보지 못했던 것을 보기 위해, 때로는 스스로에게 무게를 견디게 하며 그 속으로 들어간다.
역사 속, 그 깊은 곳에서 돌아오지 못한 채 그곳에 점을 찍은 작가들도 많다. 이 길을 걷다 보면, 관심 없는 바깥세상을 마주하며 문득 이런 생각이 들기도 한다. ‘이 아래에 있는 모든 것들이 무슨 큰 의미가 있나?’ 그래도 예술가에게는 깊이가 가장 중요하다.
모두에게 각자의 역할이 있다.
깊이를 책임지는 예술가들, 그 깊이를 알아보고 넓게 펼치려는 기획자들, 그리고 더 많은 이들을 그곳으로 이끄는 기관들까지. 그 어느 하나도 소홀할 수 없다. 각자의 역할을 충실히 해나가며, 깊고 넓게, 더 많은 사람들과 함께하는 것. 그 안에서 예술의 진정한 가치가 빛을 발한다.
이런 일들이 계속 일어나면, 땅이 파이고 길이 생긴다. 자연스럽게 예술로 흘러가는 문화적 습관이 생겨나고, ‘더 깊게, 더 넓게’ 펼쳐야 한다는 인식이 자라난다.
그러나 깊게 파내려 가다 고립된 작가들이 넘쳐나고, 낮고 넓기만 한 웅덩이에는 더 이상 볼 것이 없다.
충분한 바깥세상은 과연 언제 더 충분해질까. 그 충분함이 흘러넘쳐 깊은 아래로 스며드는 날을 기다린다.
깊이를 사랑하는 이들은 어둠 속에서도 계속 내려간다. 그 땅 속의 빛을 따라 계속 내려간다.

Art x Shift
Artists go downward. They descend into deeper, darker places, focusing on depth. To see what cannot be seen from the surface, they sometimes bear the weight of it all just to enter that space. Throughout history, many artists have left a mark in those depths—some never returning from where they went. Walking this path, there are moments when the indifferent outside world makes you pause and wonder: “Does any of this below really matter?”
Still, for the artist, depth matters most.
Everyone has a role. Artists carry the weight of depth. Curators recognize that depth and try to unfold it outward. Institutions build paths to lead more people into that space. None of these roles can be neglected. When each one fulfills its part—deep and wide—art begins to live among more people. That’s when its true value shines.
As these things keep happening, the ground is dug and a path begins to form. The ground softens. A cultural habit that naturally flows into art begins to form. And the shared awareness begins to take root: we must go deeper and wider.
But artists buried too deep often become isolated. And shallow puddles that only spread wide have nothing left to see. When will the surface world be enough? When will its abundance overflow and finally seep into the deep?
Those who love depth continue to descend, even in the darkness. They keep going down, following the light beneath the earth.

저희는 미술작가 부부로서, 예술을 만나는 방식에
변화를 시도하고자 아트쉬프트를 만들었습니다. 아트쉬프트는 예술이 단순한 결과물에 그치지 않고, 예술과 삶, 작가와 관객이 함께 어우러지는 공간입니다. 작업실, 전시공간, 카페, 굿즈샵이 결합된 이곳은 예술가의 창작 과정과 그 안에 담긴 고민, 서사를 자연스럽게 나누며, 예술이 일상 속에 스며드는 문화를 만들어가고자 합니다.
We created Art x Shift with the intention of transforming the way we as a visual artist couple engage with art. Art x Shift is a space where art goes beyond being a mere outcome, becoming a place where art, life, and the connection between artists and audiences coexist. With a combination of a studio, exhibition space, café, and a shop, this space naturally shares the process of creation, the challenges, and narratives within, while fostering a culture where art seamlessly integrates into everyday life.
