힙합을 좋아하지 않지만 한국 힙합은 더더욱 안 좋아한다. 언론을 통해서 들을 수 있는 힙합 대부분은 ‘난 쩐다.’ ‘너넨 루저’ 등의 스웩만 떠들어대는 노래가 대부분이다.
어떤 가수는자신의 스웩으로 인해 많은 사람이 ‘나도 할 수 있다’는 자신감을 얻었으면 좋겠다고 밝혔다.그러나 그 가수의스웩을 보면서 자신감을 얻는 사람은 많지 않을 것이다. 상실감과 박탈감이면 몰라도.
힙합은 원래 저항의 음악이었다. 주류에 저항하고 기존 질서에 저항해 새로운 움직임을 밑바닥부터 만들어가는 음악 말이다. 물론 ‘힙’하고 트렌디한 음악도 필요하지만 지금은 적합한 때가 아닌 듯싶다.
혹자는 미국 힙합하는 애들은 어렸을 때 가족이 총 맞아 죽고, 마약에 찌들어 개고생해서 나온 경험으로 음악을 만드는데 우리나라 애들이 꼴랑 겪은 어려움으로 만든 음악이랑 비교가 되겠냐고 비판한다. 일리가 없진 않으나 각자의 메고 있는 십자가의 무게를 어찌 타인이 측량할 수 있으랴.
난 그저 세대를 하나로 묶는 음악이 나왔으면 한다. 남자 vs 여자, 젊은 사람 VS 노인, 전라도 VS 경상도 등의 갈등을 불러일으키는 노래가 아니라 모두를 하나로 묶어 기득권과 대항할 수 있는 집단을 만들 수 있는, 좀 더 큰 가치를 노래하는 곡 말이다. 노래가 그런 일을 할 수 있냐고? 응. 당연하지.
우리가 힙합하면 생각나는 돈, 섹스, 마약 가사가 적은 편이고 팝적인 요소가 강해 호불호가 적은 힙합 뮤지션 Black Eyed Peas. 많은 히트곡이 있지만 가장 사랑스러운 노래는 <Where is the love>일 것이다. 밥 말리의 <No Woman, No cry>의 hip한 버전이라고 생각한다.
그들의 노래를 워낙 유명하기도 하지만 그룹 멤버 윌아이엠은 인터뷰를 통해 불법복제에 대한 조금 다른 생각을 밝혀 한 때 높은 인지도를 보였다
