#Kintsugi

Kintsugi (金継ぎ), meaning “golden joinery,” is a traditional Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Instead of concealing the cracks, Kintsugi highlights them, transforming the broken object into something even more beautiful and unique.

Philosophy of Kintsugi

• Embracing Imperfection: Instead of hiding flaws, Kintsugi celebrates them, reflecting the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi—finding beauty in imperfection.

• Resilience and Transformation: The repaired piece becomes stronger and more valuable, symbolizing growth, healing, and the ability to overcome hardships.

• Sustainability: Rather than discarding broken items, Kintsugi promotes repair and reuse, aligning with an eco-conscious mindset.

Kintsugi Process

1. Gathering the Pieces: The broken pottery fragments are carefully collected.

2. Applying Lacquer: A special lacquer (urushi) is used to join the pieces.

3. Dusting with Gold: Gold, silver, or platinum powder is applied to the lacquer while it’s still wet.

4. Polishing and Finishing: After drying, the surface is polished to enhance its beauty.

Kintsugi is more than just a repair technique—it’s a philosophy that teaches us to appreciate our scars, both in objects and in life, as part of our unique story.
