Hindustan Antibiotics Limited (HAL) is a pioneering Indian pharmaceutical company established on March 13, 1954, in Pimpri, Pune.
As the first government-owned drug manufacturer in India, HAL was founded with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, aiming to provide affordable medicines across the country.
It operates under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India .  
Key Highlights
• Historical Significance: HAL was inaugurated by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and began production in 1955.
It was the first company in India to produce antibiotics like Penicillin, Streptomycin, Gentamicin, Ampicillin, and Amoxycillin on a commercial scale .  
• Product Portfolio: The company offers a range of healthcare products, including antibiotics such as Hamycin, Ampicillin Sodium, Benzyl Penicillin, Cefuroxime Sodium, and Meropenem (marketed as Halpen).
HAL has also diversified into agricultural and veterinary products like Aureofungin and Streptocycline . 
• Research and Development: HAL was the first in India to launch a recombinant DNA product, rHU-Erythropoietin (Hemax), in 1993.
The company has also developed antifungal antibiotics such as Hamycin, which is produced from a strain of Streptomyces bacteria and is used for treating topical and systemic mycoses .  
• Operational Challenges: Despite its contributions, HAL has faced financial difficulties, being declared a sick company in 1997.
Although a rehabilitation scheme was sanctioned in 2007, the company continued to struggle with profitability.
A second rehabilitation plan has been submitted and is under consideration by the Government of India .
