달링 하버로 간 이상한 나라의 크리스마스

모든 아이들은 일 년 중 단 하루를 위해 산다. 밤하늘을 촬영하기 위해 카메라를 몰래 설치하는 그날(내 동생들을 위해 크리스마스의 비밀을 삼켜두고), 크리스마스다. 올 크리스마스에는 친구들이 모두 가족여행을 떠난다고 했다. 나도 친구 딜런이랑 멜버른 레고랜드 여행에 가고 싶었지만, 내 설득력은 '고려해 볼게' 정도의 대답에 그쳤다. 동생들은 고개를 저었다. “너무 멀어!” 엄마와 아빠는 “돈 없으니까 아껴야지.”라고 말씀하셨다. 결국 우리가 늘 가던 호텔, 소피텔 달링 하버에 가기로 했다.
소피텔에 도착했을 때, 눈에 띄게 달라진 점은 보이지 않았다. 로비에는 여전히 큰 직사각형 수족관이 자리하고 있었고, 양옆에는 반질반질한 리셉션 데스크와 쿠션 의자들이 놓여 있었다. 대리석으로 꾸며진 인테리어도 그대로였다. 그때 무언가가 눈길을 끌었다. 어딘가 낯선 느낌이었다. 그리고 내 눈이 고정된 곳. 전에 본 적 없는 청동 조각상이 엘리베이터 옆에 서 있었고, 입구 옆에는 투명한 피라미드 장식장 안에 4개의 조각작품이 들어 있었다.
아트 딜링 회사와 소피텔 창립자의 협약으로 이곳에 온 달리의 작품들이었다. 타임머신을 타고 온 살바도르 달리와 기쁘게 마주한 순간이었다. <시간의 여인>이라는 청동 조각상에 시선이 꽂혔다. 그리고 내 손엔 아직 새 책 냄새가 나는 <이상한 나라의 앨리스> 책이 들려 있었다. 달리가 이 고전을 무척 좋아했다는 걸 알기에 이 만남이 더욱 특별하게 느껴졌다. 피라미드 안의 조각들 중 하나도 눈에 익었다. 바로 <이상한 나라의 앨리스>였다. 조각 옆에 새겨진 명판에는 ‘구매를 원하신다면 가격을 문의하세요’라는 문구가 적혀 있었다. 달리의 작품 몇 점에 대해 아트 딜링 회사에 가격을 문의해 보았고, 답변도 받을 수 있었다. 언젠가는 크리스마스 선물로 달리를 요청해 볼 생각이다. (호호호!)
달리 작품 가격 문의 후 받은 답장 중 일부달리에게 잠시 작별 인사를 하고, 원래의 레퍼토리대로 각자의 방에 들어가 비디오 게임을 하려고 했다. 내가 TV에 닌텐도 스위치를 연결하려는데 동생들이 울부짖었다.
“우리 먼저 수영장 가고 싶단 말이야!” 작고 귀여운 인중을 움직이며 말했다.
옷을 갈아입고 서둘러 수영장으로 향했다. 하지만 기대했던 완벽한 경험은 이루어지지 않았다. 낯선 못난이 크레인이 풍경을 가리고, 감자튀김과 팝콘 치킨은 허기를 채워주지 못했다. 결국 우리는 꼭대기 층으로 올라가 애프터눈 티를 마시며 새로 산 초판본 <이상한 나라의 앨리스>를 읽기로 했다. 푸른 커튼이 드리워진 듯한 하늘과 청색 새틴으로 넘실거리는 항구를 배경으로, 앨리스의 “타르트를 훔친 자는 누구인가?”라는 챕터를 읽고 있었다. 그런데 그때, 키친에서 거대한 트레이 속에 담긴 갓 구운 타르트가 나오고 있었다. 앨리스가 계속 날 따라다니는 건가? 그렇게 난 타르트를 즐기면서 타르트를 훔친 자의 마음을 더욱 깊이 공감할 수 있었다.
접시를 비우고 나니 밖으로 나가기에 완벽한 타이밍이었다. 가까운 곳에 있는 해양 박물관보다 더 좋은 장소가 있을까? 우리 삼형제는 부모님을 제치고 박물관 앞까지 뛰어갔다. 커다란 현수막이 보였다. 그리고 눈을 의심했다 ‘제임스 카메론: Challenging The Deep’라고 문구가 쓰여 있었다. 둘째 희인이는 머릿속에 맴돌던 생각을 내뱉었다.
"제임스 카메론? <타이타닉>, <터미네이터>, <에이리언>, <어비스>, 그리고 <아바타>를 만든 그 감독?"
<타이타닉>, <터미네이터>, <아바타> 같은 내가 가장 좋아하는 영화들을 통해 평소 카메론의 연출력을 존경했을 뿐만 아니라, 타이타닉을 33번이나 탐사한 선구적인 해양 탐험가로서도 그를 흠모해 왔다. 그의 여러 영화와 다큐멘터리에 대한 지식을 바탕으로 전시회에 첫걸음을 내디뎠다.
전시장안으로 들어갔고, 예상보다 내부는 작았지만 내용은 풍부했다. 레오나르도 디카프리오의 <타이타닉> 촬영 당시 일상복과 케이트 윈슬렛이 침몰 장면에서 입었던 의상이 전시되어 있었다. <타이타닉> 촬영에 사용된 수중 탐사 로봇이 머리 위에 매달려 있었다. 심지어 로즈의 목걸이로 유명한 the Heart of the Ocean도 발견했다. 내 머릿속에는 Hymn of the Sea가 울려 퍼지고, 부드러운 파도가 금속에 부딪치는 소리가 들리는 듯 바람이 감싸는 것 같았다.
호텔 메모지에 잠수정을 스케치한 카메론의 그림과 한 해양 탐험가에게 그의 열망을 고스란히 담아 보낸 편지를 통해 거침없는 열정을 느낄 수 있었다. 방문객들이 앉아볼 수 있는 Deepsea Challenger 조종석은 장비 없이도 내 몸이 간신히 들어갈 정도로 비좁았다. 키가 1.87m인 카메론은 생명 유지 장치와 노출된 전선으로 가득 찬 이 좁은 공간에서 탐험하며 끊임없는 위험과 마주했다. 전시 공간 곳곳에는 대형 스크린으로 영상이 상영되고 있었다. Deepsea Challenger에 관한 영상에서 카메론은 마리아나 해구에서 부유하며 이전에 알려지지 않은 다양한 해양 생물들과 마주했고, 이를 통해 다시금 해양 자연에 대한 사랑을 불태웠다. 상상 속에서나 튀어나올 듯한 생명체들이 심해에서 춤추는 모습은 해양 생물을 애정하며 많은 그림을 남겼던 칸딘스키를 떠올리게 하기도 했다.
카메론의 작업들을 통해서 단순한 호기심과 결단력이 진실을 향한 여정을 이끌었다는 걸 배울 수 있었다. 이건 <이상한 나라의 앨리스>의 호기심을 잃지 말라는 메시지와도 닮아있었다. 제임스 카메론은 새로운 도전이 얼마나 어려운지 보여준다. 많은 사람들이 타이타닉의 마지막 안식처에 도달하려는 그의 호기심을 꺾어보려 시도했지만, 결국 타이타닉을 탐사하는데 성공했다. 그는 신체적으로도 정신적으로도 가장 깊은 곳에 도달한 사람이다. 카메론은 나를 겸손하게 만들었다. 지구에서 가장 깊은 곳을 탐험한 것만으로도 대단한데, 그걸 넘어 계속해서 새로운 가능성을 열어갔기 때문이다. 호기심을 품은 채 전시장에 들어왔지만, 이젠 깊은 영감을 안고 나간다.
A Wonderland Christmas to Darling Harbour
All children live for one day of the year. The day children set up cameras spying on the night sky (as I gulp the secret about Christmas down for the sake of my brothers): Christmas. For Christmas, my school friends were going away, like my family. I wanted to join one of my friends, Dylan, on the trip to Melbourne Legoland, yet my debating was only enough to be considered. My brothers shook their heads (“Too far!”) with Mum and Dad. “Our finances are humble.” In the end, our regular hotel was decided: Sofitel Darling Harbour.
As our car pulled up alongside Sofitel, I noticed nothing new. The lobby still had a large rectangular fish tank flanked by polished reception desks accompanied by cushioned chairs and a marble interior. But something was bothering my eyes, something felt out of place. My eyes snapped. A bronze statue, never seen before, was standing next to the elevators, while a transparent pyramid with 4 sculptures encased in it stood by the door.
Brought to Sofitel by an agreement with an art-dealing company and the founder, I met with my friend Salvador Dali’s works which travelled in a time machine just for me. In a ‘joyful’ shock, my eyes were glued to the bronze statue, which was Woman of Time. I clutched my Alice In Wonderland book in my hand, still smelling of fresh print, as Dali was an aficionado of the classic. I even recognised one of the sculptures in the pyramid: Alice in Wonderland. The plaques stenciled next to the sculptures beckoned viewers to inquire about the price ‘should you wish to acquire them’. I decided to send a price inquiry about some of Dali’s works (they had responded!). In the future, I am going to request a Dali for Christmas (Ho ho ho).

As I bade farewell to Dali for the time being, we followed our typical repertoire: we waddle to our own rooms where we play video games. My brothers, at the sight of me wiring the Nintendo Switch to the TV, started bawling at the top of their voices.
They spoke while moving a small, cute philtrum. “But we wanna go to the swimming pool first!”
We hurried to the swimming pool after we slipped on our swimwear. But the perfect experience they envisioned in their eyes was not to be. Unfamiliar ugly cranes obstructed our view while the bowls of fries and popcorn chicken unsatisfied our stomachs. We went to the top floor to eat afternoon tea and read my new first-edition Alice in Wonderland book. With the harbour, an indigo satin posted across the sky blue curtains, I was reading the chapter “Who Stole the Tarts?” in Alice in Wonderland when I found tarts served on a massive tray fresh from the kitchen: was Alice going to keep following me? My empathy grew deeper for the tart thief while enjoying my tarts.
As the plate was emptied, it was the perfect time to venture outside, and what place better than the Maritime Museum, which was just a short walk from here? As we three children raced there with our parents walking behind us, a giant banner towered over us. My eyes were surely deceiving me: James Cameron: Challenging the Deep. My second brother, Heein, spilled his thoughts through his mouth.
“James Cameron? The director who filmed Titanic, The Terminator, Alien, The Abyss, and Avatar?”
I had revered Cameron’s role as a director of Titanic, The Terminator, and Avatar - some of my favourite movies. I also admired him as a trailblazing marine explorer, visiting the Titanic 33 times. I took my first step into the exhibition, armed with the knowledge of many of Cameron’s movies and documentaries.
The room was smaller than expected, but rich in detail, showcasing multiple ‘Cameron’ originals, such as Leonardo De Caprio’s Titanic day clothes and Kate Winslet’s sinking dress. A submersible rover used for the filming of Titanic hung overhead. I even stumbled upon the Heart of the Ocean, my head filled with the Hymn of the Sea and the gentle waves brushing against metal, as I felt the wind embrace me.
I felt his untamed enthusiasm through sketches of submersibles on hotel notepads and a passionate letter to an undersea explorer. The Deepsea Challenger’s replica pilot sphere (which visitors can sit in) barely fit me without gear. Cameron, at 1.87m tall, navigated this cramped space filled with life support systems and exposed wires, facing constant danger. Every corner had a video on a big screen. In a video about the Deepsea Challenge, Cameron was floating in the Mariana Trench where he encountered a variety of undiscovered marine animals, reigniting his love for marine nature. Critters, jumping out of imagination, danced in the deep sea, reminding me of Wassily Kandinsky, who also loved marine nature, dedicating many paintings just to them.
