주어진 영문을 활용해 글을 쓰는 시간입니다. 100 단어 혹은 200 단어로 길이를 정해놓고 시도해 보세요. 주제 한 가지만 선택해도 되지만, 두 가지를 모두 활용해 매일 조금씩 적는다면 일주일치 영어 공부가 됩니다.
주제 1
유명한 작품 속 글을 발췌하였습니다. 이를 읽고 앞이나 뒤 이야기를 채워보세요. 읽은 소감도 좋고 자신만의 방식으로 다시 글을 적거나 작가 혹은 주인공과 대화를 나누어도 됩니다.
주제 2
영국에 살면서 맞닥뜨릴 수 있는 다양한 글쓰기, 읽기 상황을 꾸며봤습니다. 실제 경험한 일도 있고 주변 사람이 겪은 일, 방송이나 영화에서 본 내용을 바탕으로 쓴 글도 있습니다. 제가 직접 작성한 글이니 영어가 어색하더라도 이해해 주세요.
주제 1 - 유명 작가의 작품 이어서 쓰기

보충 설명: 윌리엄 서머셋 몸의 소설 <페인티드 베일>에 나오는 글입니다.
2006년에 개봉한 동명의 영화 원작이기도 합니다. 전반적인 이야기 흐름은 책과 동일하지만, 주인공 남녀의 복잡다단한 감정 흐름은 조금씩 다르게 펼쳐집니다. 남자 주인공이 에드워드 노튼이라는 사실만으로도 책에서 묘사한 남성미도 없고, 무뚝뚝한 월터와는 동일 인물이 될 수 없다 여겼지요.
소설에서는 여 주인공 키티가 이야기를 이끌어 갑니다. 이 때문에 영화판 <페인티드 베일>은 로맨스로 소개되는 반면, 소설판 <페인티드 베일>은 심리 소설로 분류됩니다. 개인적으로 소설의 결론이 마음에 안 드는데, 이 부분만 고친다면 여성 성장 소설로 볼 수도 있을 듯합니다. 영국 작가가 1925년에 쓴 작품이다 보니 여성을 바라보는 시각이 지금과 다르겠지요. 여성의 참정권과 재산권이 남성과 동등해지기 전이니까요. 결론만 놓고 보면 영화가 더 낫습니다.
영화와 책이 다른 관점으로 진행되는 셈이지만 둘 다 흥미롭게 감상할 만한 작품이라 할 수 있습니다. 결혼, 사랑에서 모두 어리석은 선택을 하는 바람에 그 대가를 혹독하게 치르는 여성의 이야기입니다.
중국에 반환하기 전 영국의 식민지로 남아있던 1920년대 홍콩을 배경으로 하므로 당시 시대적 분위기도 엿볼 수 있습니다.
위 글은, 위험한 사랑에 빠진 키티가 상대 남성에게 집착하며 하는 말입니다. 누가 봐도 나쁜 남자의 전형인 찰리를 사랑하게 된 자신의 어리석음을 원망하면서 말이죠.

보충 설명: 치솟는 물가 때문에 룸메이트를 집에 들이려 하는군요.
룸메이트를 구한다는 공고문을 대학가나 마트 게시판, 지역 신문, 온라인 등에서 볼 수 있습니다. 룸메이트를 구하려면 애완동물 소유, 흡연 여부, 비용 분담, 생활 규칙 등 세세하게 정해야 훗날 문제가 없겠지요. 이런 상황을 상상해 보고 공고문 내용을 적어 봅시다.
