120여 년 전 살았던 정원디자이너이자, 예술가이자, 품종연구가로서 거트루트지킬이라는장미종을창안한 그녀의 예술중심의 소양을 보면, 그녀의 정원과 우리의 조경이 어떻게 다른지를 확연히 보여진다. 정원관련 글들을 보면, 대부분 정원의 역사와 디자이너의 유명세를 만들어준 사건에 중점을 두는데 정말제대로 컨텐츠를 다루려면,디자이너의 삶을 둘러 싸고 있는 학습내용이나, 경험이무엇인가를

새로개강하는 정원예술학교의 첫 수업을 준비하며 정원예술 디자인이 무엇인지,정원예술 디자인은 어떻게이루어 지는지를 정리하며 찾은 거트루트 지킬의 인생 스토리는 , 정원예술가가되는데 필요한 클래식,ABC코스가이것이구나 라는 생각에 이르게 되었다. 화가가 되려 했던 그녀는공예, 패턴, 자수, 금속공예, 사진작가로의삶을 살다 눈이 나빠지며 정원디자이너로 예술표현방법을 바꾸게 되었다.
후기인상주의 작가들의 색채와 기법 등을 적용하며 칼라와 질감 풍부한 빛을 정원으로 도입하여
이전의권력과 부를 상징하는 정원표현 방식을 아름다움을 표현하는 정원 양식으로 대전환을 하여
지금까지도그녀의 영향을 받은 걸출한 디자이너들이 탄생하는 계기가 되었다.나 또한 그의 문하생을
자처하며 시대를 넘나 들고, 서책과 인터넷 정보로 그녀의 조언과 도움을 받으며 세계 정원 디자이너들
예술애호가들의 그녀에 대한 사모의 글과 연구의 글들을 접하게 된다. 위대한예술가, 랜드스케이프

Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932)Gertrude Jekyll was one of the twentiethcentury's most important British landscape designers and writers. In the courseof her career, Jekyll consulted on approximately 350 gardens in England andabroad. Also a prolific writer, she was extremely influential during the latenineteenth and early twentieth century in opening up the question of what agarden should be. Jekyll is often referred to in conjunction with Sir Edwin Lutyens, anarchitect with whom she worked on more than 100 gardens. One of the mostwell-known projects by the two is Hestercombe in Somerset.
Art and design had always been central inJekyll's world. Her earliest aspiration was to be a painter and she attendedthe South Kensington School of Art, going on to pursue crafts including:carpentry, gilding, wood inlay and metalwork. She was among the first amateurphotographers, she embarked on embroidery designs for the Royal School of Needlework, andshe experimented with textile and wallpaper design.
TheJekyll collection includes presentation drawings, planting plans, plant lists,surveys, photographs, and correspondence relating to residential gardensthroughout the United Kingdom. Photograph albums contain studies of landscapes,gardens, floral arts, plants and rural subjects, as well as portraits. Thegreatest number of photographs represent Jekyll's own garden at Munstead Wood.
